#BuyNothingDay is a great start. Gifts can also be experiences, like having friends over for a dinner or a games night, or handmade items, or even some manual labour to help someone. If you have to buy something then explore second hand stores or online marketplaces that sell used but good condition merchandise. Reduce and Reuse need more emphasis well before we get to Recycle. -

Probably for the first time in many, many years, I unfortunately did not buy nothing on Buy Nothing Day this year. But it was quite accidental that it was just today that I got around to go out and buy the book I ordered some time ago. And it was the great Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, that I bought at not just a small, radical bookshop, but a co-operative bookshop at that! With no mention of Black Friday at all anywhere. So I think it's ok. Almost every day is #BuyNothingDay for me.

One of the (many) fights we had at the worker-owned bike co-op I worked at for most of my 20s-30s was whether or not to be open on #BlackFriday AKA #BuyNothingDay.
Close for the day in solidarity with BND, or remain open and hopefully take some sales that would otherwise go to more exploitative businesses? (In 2005 that would’ve been Performance, but in 2025: Amazon)
When you’re a small business with low margins and these big shopping days happen during your off-season, it’s a tough decision.
