Gardeners urged to ‘deadhead’ their flowers to attract 1 pretty animal https://www.allforgardening.com/1352028/gardeners-urged-to-deadhead-their-flowers-to-attract-1-pretty-animal/ #butterflies #ButterflyConservation #deadheading #flowers #garden #gardening #gardens #plants #RoyalHorticulturalSociety

We had a blast of summer yesterday, & with it an influx of butterflies into our garden. I was excited to see the only Painted Lady this year, & a Red Admiral - both species Vanessa. I got my phone out & got a quick shot. But when Iooked at the photo the Painted Lady isn’t there! The butterfly here is definitely a Comma!? Maybe the Painted Lady flew off seconds before I pointed my camera?

My daily lepidopterological (is that a new word?) activities are truly picking up, as of yesterday.
#InMyGarden not one, not two, but three butterfly species visited me, and two of them gave me the stare: a Red Admiral and a Small White. The third one - a male Orange Tip - was too busy flitting about to look around.

It’s late in the season, but #today ‘s autumn sunshine warming the gravel has attracted this beautiful warm-orange Comma known universally as
Polygonia c-album
female I think, but of the late season hutchinsoni variety - maybe it was bred on our nettle patch (we have plenty on our field boundary!)#AutumnVibes

I’d love to know for sure what this extraterrestrial-like creature is. I think it’s either a white ermine or satin moth, but better lepidopterists than me might correct me. I took the poorer photo looking at the moth’s face and comb-like antennae yesterday - a difficult angle as it was sitting on the garage door. I took the other photo earlier of another example, sitting on the floor.

At last a beautiful Comma sighted, the first of the summer brood.
I’ve read its numbers made a come-back in UK over the last 50 years, as it changed its preferred plant from hops to nettles. It’s one of the Polygonia butterflies, a name which means ‘many angles’ - as we can see on the edges of its wings.#InMyGarden #CommaButterfly #butterflies #SaveButterflies #ButterflyConservation #GayGardener #lepidoptera

"Legion is a little word for the butterflies; the dry pastures among the
woods are brown with meadow-brown; blues and coppers float in endless succession; all the nations of Xerxes' army were but a handful to these."Those were the words of Richard Jefferies in Field and Hedgerow – Hours of Spring.
