one of nine different butterfly species I sighted in my neighbourhood today - the highest number this year in a single day. This is a female Meadow Brown, ‘maniola’ genus, the only one spotted, sheltering in a hedge from a strong summer breeze.

To celebrate the start of (meteorological) summer, this beautiful Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) has paid a visit to our neighbourhood
😍Its genus ‘Vanessa’ is a group of brush-footed butterflies. Like so many first classified & named by the entomologist Fabricius, ‘Atalanta’ is taken from ancient Greek mythology, a fleet-footed princess.
