I decided I would like to learn Italian, but I really didn't get on with the apps, first Duolingo (rather childish and with the whole annoying gamification thing) and then Busuu (much better, but still not for me).

Then I came upon the comprehensible input thing. I tried an Italian comic (Sempre più grande Gaston), which was fun. Now it's time for a bigger project.

And what would be better than one of my all-time favourites?

Let down by my vocab (quelle surpr—qué sorpresa) and in one case confusing the past participle with the present participle. Not bad given that I knew no Spanish whatsoever this time last year!

I wonder about re-taking the A1 and A2 "exams" (20-30 minute quizes) just to see if I've improved at my basics. I got in the 80-90% range for those at the time too.

Ich sehe auf Duolingo nie Werbung, obwohl ich nix bezahle, ohne werbeblocker , nutze aber die Webversion statt der App. Hin und wieder bekomme ich gar die Premiumversion kostenlos für mehrere Monate, die ich an den unbegrenzten Herzen erkenne. Trotzdem nutze auch noch #busuu (webversion und sehe da nur Eigenwerbung) und airlearn als Alternativen, beides kostenlos. Beide Alternativen haben auch Grammatikerklärungen. #Airlearn nur als App verfügbar, #Languagetoot

Ich nutzte gern #busuu ohne App, um Italienisch und Russisch zu lernen. Seit kurzem nutze ich auch die App #Airlearn. Da gibt es taeglich 5 Lektionen und neben guten Grammatikerklärungen und viel Wiederholungen gibt es auch viel über Land und leute zu lernen. Sehr visuell, aber Bilder sind KI- generiert.

What I *do* like about #Busuu is that what it does teach, it teaches well.

Having videos and voice recordings of actual people talking is so much better than the few weeks of Duolingo I tried.

It teaches Castilian Spanish by default, with notes on differences in Latin America, which is perfect for me.

It doesn't rely as much as Duolingo on just clicking words.

The community where you can write or record freeform sentences and have them corrected by native speakers is really good.

So it's clear that #Busuu expects a lot of learning outside of the app, but if that's the case then the streak system and minimum daily study targets don't make sense.

Features I think it should therefore have:

* Grammar practice. conjuguemos.com is where I go for that, but it uses different terminology to Busuu for tenses which trips me up, and doesn't teach translations, just the mechanics.

* Way more vocab practice. I have 400 words at A2 level. I think it should be in the 1000s.

I also passed #Busuu's A2 level today (B-) so I might as well give that a quick review too: the A1 course is very good; there's clearly less effort gone into the A2 level, so I'm wondering how much use B1-C1 will be.

There's a lot I feel I should have been taught by now and words in the A2 test that aren't in the vocab review (eg: jefe). I haven't been taught numbers over 30. Cutlery. Most clothing items. A lot of food and restaurant menu terms.

My Spanish after six months of learning with #Busuu for about 10-20 mins a day wasn't quite good enough for me to follow conversations or order in restaurants in Spain when noise made it too hard to hear, but I can see how being surrounded by a language helps learning too; it gives solid context to things that I only knew in theory. I was able to say fragmented bits when in situations where I couldn't speak English, and I suspect the "when there's no alternative" is also good for learning!

Ich nutze #Busuu , um als deutscher Muttersprachler #Italienisch zu lernen, aber #Französisch gibt es dort auch von A1 bis B2. Es gibt dort auch Grammatikerklärungen und die Möglichkeit Texte zu schreiben und von anderen in der Community korrigieren zu lassen.
Interessant ist auch der interaktive Audiokurs von languagetransfer (En--> Fr)
