  1. Information Barriers in Corporate Partnerships May Stifle Innovation

New research shows that when companies build walls to protect secrets in partnerships, it can stop new ideas and breakthroughs. This affects companies and their future products.

  4. How it may promote this idea what someone has to wear to be seen in a very specific way.
That if you want to pass, you have to wear tucking panties or shape wear boxers. (Or just the idea that you have to pass in general.)
It’s more obviously a market and product research question, but I am in entrepreneurship, and it’s not out of line to talk about how this might impact the creation of new companies. Such as more authentic products being pushed away.

  5. Back to some actual research posting since it is pride month after all.
I have a lot of conversations with my advisor about the concept of ‘washing’. For me, it’s usually rainbow washing and for him, it’s usually craft washing.
As an interception of these two similar concepts, I’ve been thinking a lot about different ‘transgender’ clothing lines. How these products fit only a narrow view of trans man/trans woman, how they’re largely inaccessible…

  6. CW: Alcohol, homophobia

Me: so I think that rainbowwashing is probably not an avenue that I need to look at for this paper
    My advisor: what’s rainbow washing
Me: it’s like when companies pretend to support gay people but then donate to Trump
My advisor: oh so like craft washing? I just wrote about how Blue Moon pretends to be a craft beer

  7. As I'm typing up my reading list for my small business management workshop, I'm reminded that I need to get back to posting about my reading list for my thesis. Particularly after the conversation I sparked off today about LGBTQ chambers of commerce. It's not all obscure hospitality research papers. Some of it's obscure LGBTQ tour guide books for Key West.

  8. While likely not as popular as my thread of posts about my sex life, I have been working on the small business management workshop that I’ll be presenting on how to plan for the paranormal tourism industry. The main point of this workshop is similar to my thesis - management guides need to exist for the management of specific cultural spaces.
My argument for this is built on business ethics concerns, quality of creative writing, and the intersection of historical accuracy.

  9. One of the fun little things I had to do recently was submit a list of objectives for my research. Which in this context meant telling my department what could be the possible industry applications could be for all of this work.

  13. I suppose there's a certain amount of irony in that all of my long term relationships have ended because of academia and that I'm about to spend the rest of my life studying LGBTQ community building.

  14. Recently, a friend (a cis gay man who works in hospitality and tourism management) said that it had never really occured to him that there might be a difference between gay bar operations and general bar operations. Which was followed by the question, how much difference do you think there actually is in the two operations modes?
And, reader, I don't know. That's why this is my research.

  15. Some of the nerdiest tattoos I've thought about getting recently but they're all just phrases:

    10,000 Hours

    πthon

    debit = credit

[redacted phrase about business ethics that's the unofficial motto for my professional fraternity]

    ALE ( A = L + E )

    False == (1 > 2)
    True

  16. Things related to math happening in my life so far in 2023:
    1. Learning programming languages.
    2. Taking courses in descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analysis.
    3. Upping the level of my excel certificate.
    4. Starting my thesis research.
    5. Starting a small business.
    6. Interviewing for a job where I was asked to perform my technical skills on the spot.
    7. Re-starting my work with graphing calculator art.

  17. Them, people generally concerned about my well-being: what do you want to do with your life after grad school?
Me, externally: research into entrepreneurship in LGBTQ communities as a method of creating more inclusive public spaces
Me, internally: spend the rest of my life writing about, creating, and selling business fashion for queer people

  18. The peak of my academic life (up to this point) is really going to come from using classic queer media as sources for my thesis. So far I'm at:
    1. The Boys in the Band (1968, 1970, 2018)
    2. La Cage aux Folles (1973, 1978)
    3. The Birdcage (1996)
    4. Paris Is Burning (1990)
    5. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1973, 1975)

They all connect back to the creation of queer spaces...somehow. La Cage aux Folles is even literally about managing a drag bar.

  19. In the work that has already been produced on my research focus, the face off that I've seen most often is gay bar versus LGBTQ bar.
The argument from one side is that gay bar is unnecessary gendering and creates the atmosphere of a strictly men's bar. The argument from the other direction is that gay has become a more generalized term and is no longer as gendered.

What I'm concerned about is how that impacts the ROI. (joke)

  20. Today, I'm working on the annotated bibliography that I have to submit at the end of this semester before I officially beginning my research on gay bar management.
With the bit of creative freedom I've been given on this assignment, I've chosen to include several books, plays, and movies as support for the background and necessity of my work.
As I start to post abut my work again, let's go to The Boys in the Band.

Long winded way of saying I’m having a very good week!

  23. Whoops, am I screwing myself over by applying to a management PhD program at a school where my platonic partner teaches? Even if he was the one who encouraged me to come to his region to do my research? Being a gay in business gets very complicated very quickly.

  24. Conversations about grad school with someone who works at one of the schools I'm considering:

Me: "Do you think I can safely do a PhD in Dallas with my identity and research interests?"
Him: "I think the gay bars in Dallas need a lot of help."

  25. To other people at my institution, the weirdest thing I’ve ever done is collect faculty members like trading cards in terms of the connections I’ve made in my field.

To me, about other people at my institution, the weirdest thing they’ve ever done is not bother to learn anything about anyone they’ve ever taken a class from, outside of their last names.

And it’s just: Now who’s the one getting so much offered help on their thesis?

  26. One of the best uses of my academic connections is just being able to DM people on LinkedIn about weird research questions about things that bother me in different retail stores.
Feature of this week: questions about supply chain issues for specific dairy products in sustained demand.

  27. someone way away from me, involved in a conversation I have no business being involved in, lightly whispers, "I'm thinking of investing in crypto"
me, sitting doing research notes, standing up and dashing to their table, against my better judgement to say, in an academic terms, "please don't"

  28. CW: Discussion of food products and ND disabilities

Glad I went to business school so that my training in combination with my neurodivergencies can make me incredibly bothered by new product line offerings found in the Dollar General.

  29. Heading to another Gulf Coast Diplomacy meeting tomorrow afternoon. Hosted in its usual spot in a historic district bar. Which means heading into downtown Pensacola to intermingle with the springbreakers. In a navy pinstripe suit and gecko tie. All so I can talk to diplomats about economic development and extension agencies and freedom of thought.

  30. option 1: being productive with my research notes and sending more inquiries about PhD programs
option 2: adding sketches of Pensacola landmarks to pages from my tear away new yorker cartoon desk calendar

  31. Gendered Products

Is it necessary to gender any products?
Many of us say no, but is there a business reason to support this argument.

One scenario is that excessive, hyper-gendering of products may lead to a variety of extreme differentiation that negatively impacts sales.

The perfect example of this is the design, branding, and advertising of razors.

My theory is that the more complicated the design, the more gendered the product presentation.
