Unite confirms suspension of First Cymru bus strike after improved pay offer
The union Unite confirmed late on Wednesday that its members will now be balloted on the latest offer, with voting set to close on 28 November. If the deal is rejected, strike action will begin on Sunday 7 December and continue throughout December until 21 January, as previously announced.
Ballot now the focus
Unite regional officer Alan McCarthy said:
“Following the announcement of a winter of strike action, First Cymru has finally come forward with an improved pay offer. As an act of goodwill, Unite has agreed to suspend strike action while a ballot of our members takes place.”
The suspension marks a significant development in a dispute that had threatened to cause widespread disruption to bus services across South and West Wales in the run‑up to Christmas.
First Cymru response
In a statement, First Cymru said:
“Industrial action that was due to begin on 20 November across Wales has been suspended until 7 December while Unite the Union ballots its members on a revised pay offer.
“We’re genuinely grateful to both Unite and ACAS for the constructive conversations that helped us reach this point. First Bus services across south and west Wales will continue to run as normal during this period, which we know matters to everyone who relies on us for work, school and other daily commitments.
“Thanks for your patience and understanding throughout this process. We’ll continue to keep you updated as things develop.”
Pay and back‑pay at the heart of the dispute
Drivers had been preparing for continuous strike action in protest at low hourly pay rates and claims that First Cymru was attempting to withhold back‑pay.
Unite has argued that drivers’ current rate of £13.40 per hour lags behind competitors such as Stagecoach, which pays £14.44 per hour, and has demanded a minimum of £14.30 per hour plus back‑pay.
The company previously warned that prolonged strike action would cause “hugely disruptive” impacts for passengers, while insisting it had made an above‑inflation pay offer alongside investment in staff facilities and benefits.
What happens next
The outcome of the ballot will determine whether the improved offer is accepted or whether strike action resumes in December.
For now, bus services across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, Carmarthen, Ammanford and Haverfordwest are expected to run as normal until the ballot closes.

The planned continuous strike by First Cymru bus drivers, due to begin on Thursday 20 November, has been postponed until 7 December, according to a late-night Facebook post by Neath Port Talbot Council leader Cllr Steve Hunt.
Cllr Hunt published the update at 10.31pm on Tuesday, writing:
“The First Cymru bus drivers strike has been postponed and will not go ahead from this Thursday 20th November. After talks today between First Cymru and Unite the Union, the planned strike action that was to continue from this Thursday 20th November has been postponed until 7th December.”
At the time of writing, no official confirmation has been issued by either First Cymru or Unite, leaving passengers awaiting clarity on whether services will run as normal later this week.
Pay dispute that sparked the strike
The strike action was announced earlier this month after negotiations over pay broke down. Unite members at depots across Swansea, Port Talbot, Bridgend, Carmarthen, Ammanford and Haverfordwest had voted to escalate to a continuous strike running until 21 January.
Drivers have argued that their current pay rate of £13.40 per hour lags behind competitors such as Stagecoach, which pays £14.44 per hour. Unite has demanded a minimum of £14.30 per hour plus back pay, accusing First Cymru of withholding agreed payments and attempting to undermine union solidarity by offering £50 incentives to cross picket lines.
Union anger and company warnings
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham previously described the company’s approach as “union-busting” and said drivers were “furious” at being left behind in the industry.
First Cymru, meanwhile, has insisted it has made an above-inflation pay offer alongside investment in staff facilities and benefits, and warned that prolonged strikes would cause “hugely disruptive” impacts for passengers.
What happens next
If the postponement is confirmed, bus services across South and West Wales may continue as normal until 7 December, when Unite has indicated action could resume if no agreement is reached.
For now, passengers are advised to check for updates directly from First Cymru and Unite the Union, as neither has yet issued a formal statement on the postponement.

Welsh Government lays out plan for major changes to bus services in Wales
A new Bill has been laid in the Senedd which proposes bringing bus services back within public sector control.
The plan for a London-style franchise system would allow transport officials to decide what bus services are provided. Bus companies would then bid for contracts instead of operating their own routes.
Other parts of the UK, including Manchester, have started introducing bus franchises.
The Welsh Government says the changes would encourage more bus travel, benefitting passengers and local communities.
Concerns have been raised on affordability of bus travel as several local bus operators announced price increases. Swansea Council have been running a series of free bus days during school holidays to make travel more affordable in the city.
AdvertisementThe Bus Services (Wales) Bill outlines how bus services will be planned and co-ordinated at a national level and delivered principally through franchised contracts by private, third and public sector operators.
Welcoming the Bill, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said it had the potential to transform local bus services across the whole of Wales.
He said: “This is a historic day for public transport in Wales, as proposals for bus reform begin their journey through the Senedd. This is about putting people first by providing one network, one timetable and one ticket across Wales.
“Change is needed. While many bus services work well, and some areas are well-served, it is not the case everywhere and for everyone. I want to see a bus network which puts people and communities first, with reliable, affordable and easy-to-use services; joined-up services which link with other forms of transport such as trains and active travel.
“The benefits of better bus services are clear and include increasing equity for those who need public transport the most and providing an alternative to the car.”
AdvertisementKen Skates added: “We’ve already seen how an integrated bus service can work, for example the Traws services, including the T1 service which has a ticket which is fully integrated with rail. Across North Wales we have the 1bws ticket which is valid on virtually every local bus service in the area. These are examples of what integrated services can deliver.
“I don’t underestimate the scale of change the proposals in this Bill will deliver, and for that reason it will be rolled out region by region. But the change will be transformational.”
Plaid Cymru are supporting the bill, however criticised the 5 years it has taken to bring the legislation to the Senedd.
Plaid Cymru’s Transport spokesman, Peredur Owen Griffiths, said: “Bus franchising is a step that is integral to the future of sustainable, affordable and reliable bus services for the future, which makes the Labour government’s delay in its implementation frustrating.”
The Welsh Conservatives have criticised the plan saying the Bill raises serious concerns about centralisation, lack of competition, financial sustainability, and the risk of turning the bus network into “yet another taxpayer-funded money pit”.
AdvertisementWelsh Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, Peter Fox MS, said: “The Welsh Labour Government has delayed action on this issue for far too long. As a result, I fear the outcome risks becoming a disorganised and poorly executed mess.
“Franchising bus services across Wales does come with risks if not executed properly, stifling competition and becoming yet another taxpayer-funded money pit.
“The Welsh Government must ensure that support is focused on the most hard-to-reach areas, ensuring communities receive the assistance they truly need, an issue that successive Ministers have failed to grasp so far.”
Aaron Hill, director of lobby group Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) Cymru, said: “Simply changing who’s in charge won’t guarantee success – passengers will only see better buses if commitments are backed by adequate funding, and by steps to speed up buses by taking them out of traffic congestion.”
If the bill is passed in the Senedd, franchising would start in 2027 in South West Wales.

I have a fancy new tablet which brings out the startling quality of my phone camera. Going through my camera album to pick out some of the best to transfer, this was the one that resonated most.

When American photographer Esther Bubley was 22, she took a 6 week Greyhound bus trip on her own, starting in New York City and ending in Memphis. She was hired by the US Office of War Information (OWI) to document everyday moments during the transition from economic depression to mobilization for WW II, as wartime rationing of gasoline and rubber drove the public to embrace mass transportation

Ljubljana coach station is quite pretend-easy to navigate.
There is a clear line of platforms, with numbers and names of the cities where the buses head. Like, for example "Pula". And that's where I stood. Alone. Until doubt stroke and I checked my ticket, where it stood platforms 29-30, because Flixbus.
Are the platforms 29-30 placed after platform 25 and invisible platforms 26-28? Well, not exactly, but in the opposite direction, close to the beginning of the line. Now you know.
And here I thought I was on my way to the rather ordinary* Swedish town Skövde...

#IslandLink #bus company has expanded its service to northern #VancouverIsland, taking its fleet past Campbell River for the first time.
“The company now has Vancouver Island covered,” owner Phillip Morgan said Friday.
Riders can catch the bus from #PortHardy at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in Victoria by mid-afternoon. The northern run from Victoria will arrive in Port Hardy by 5:30 p.m., Morgan said.

A note for people taking bus out of Belgrade: there is a 220 local money / appr 2€ entry fee to the platforms. You can buy it from the furthest left counter, and hand the receipt to the person at the platform entry.

The lake was once used and a landing and take off area for flying boats and there was a flying boat maintenance facility there during WWII as it was considered to be out of reach of Japanese aircraft advancing on Australia from the north. The photos were taken from the Adelaide to Albury #bus as it travelled through the town.

@CloudyMrs I use the bus a lot and the number of young people on the buses now is really striking. Coincidentally, after the Scottish Govt rolled out the free bus pass for young uns. Oddly, there’s been no coverage in the press of its success
