I hope, at the end, #BurtYoung found peace with this horrible murder in his family. Given how I experienced the news as a 9 year old boy and had it recur in my thoughts for the next half-century, it's next to impossible for me to scale it to being the father to the victim, the husband to the murderer.

I grieve for Richie, I grieve for Burt. My heart goes out to Anne, his sister who I never knew or met (she was too young to go to OLS at the time). My condolences to the family and friends.

Until I graduated Our Lady of Sorrows School in Corona NY in 1977, a classmate and I would set an empty desk next to us "for Richie" in every class, like Elijah's cup at the table during a seder, filled with the wine of our memory.

I can understand the family keeping a tragic event out of the public eye during #BurtYoung's career.

But Richie existed. He was Burt and Gloria's son. He was my friend. He should not be erased in an account of Burt's life.
