"The Center Street Cut-Ups" is the abbreviated title of the latest Third Mind Books original presentation, "HAVE A PLEASANT TRIP... 210 Center Street NYC 1965: the Cut-Up Life of William S. Burroughs," -- crafted with monocle at the ready by TMB founder & Ann Arbor eminence, Arthur S. Nusbaum with the assistance of Joe Provenzano (VP of Operations at Third Mind Books, and Nusbaum's protégé in life and literature).
The focus, here as elsewhere is on WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS -- the Patron Saint-Demon of Third Mind Books -- and even more specifically, on a tranche of documents acquired at auction belonging to the painter, David Prentice. Prentice was a close, personal friend to Burroughs and his Papers document
document a very key time in the development of the Cut-Ups as both a literary technique and original philosophic contribution.
The presentation was first delivered at the European Beat Studies Network Conference (ebsn.eu) in Paris, France in September of 2023, and was re-recorded with narration by the author in December of that same year.

The interview was conducted in Hackney, London on the 10th July 1985. To our knowledge this is the only authentic document stating exactly how Brion Gysin experienced these events, previously only mythologised in both the Astory of Jajouka, and books on The Rolling Stones. On the original cassette box Brion wrote afterwards...

Produced in 1973. Directed by Antony Balch (who worked extensively with William S. Burroughs). Starring Michael Gough, Robin Ask, Vanessa Shaw. A pair of friends on a british rail trip soon find themselves in a secluded mansion with a slew of bizarre characters and an even more bizarre secret.
Robin Askwith (just prior to his shift into a sex comedy franchise) is a stressed out singer with a pop group. He decides to go for some R&R at a country retreat. He hooks up with Vanessa Shaw on the train journey in, and once they arrive at the retreat they find it's a bizarro world inhabited by mute bikers, lobotomised robots, a malignant dwarf and a mad doctor (Michael Gough) in a wheelchair!

"I was a big fan of his books, and read them all when they came out. I read Naked Lunch when I was very young and thought it was telling people to go out and get high. I've just reread it, though, and realised it's the opposite. It's an anti-drug book. What is striking is that all his visions and prophecies, all the new drugs that hadn't been invented when he was writing Naked Lunch, came true. He hit the nail on the head. I last read it again a few weeks ago and the book is by no means a period piece. It's still terrifying. The last thing Naked Lunch is about is drugs - they are just a sidebar. But that is how people come to Burroughs. They think he was about that one thing, but he went much further than that. What he did in his personal life and what he is as an artist are quite different."

Burroughs 101
This American Life host Ira Glass was never into William Burroughs. Didn't get why people love his writing so much. Then he heard this radio story that changed all that, partly because it wasn't very reverential about Burroughs. For Burroughs 101st birthday, we hear that story.
Iggy Pop, the documentary's narrator, begins by listing some of the artists and artistic movements influenced by Burroughs: Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Steely Dan, Kurt Cobain, Lou Reed; punk, heavy metal. We hear from director John Waters on the impact on him of Burroughs' open homosexuality and frankness about sex. Others talk about Burroughs' heroin addiction and obsession with guns and weapons. Burroughs shot his wife to death in what he said was a terrible accident.
The screenshot is a post by a friend, who prefers to remain anonymous, from several years ago. It's horribly relevant again, for obvious reasons.
I'd prefer to know, on the whole. Particularly when the artist in question is still alive: I may (or may not) still be able to enjoy their art that I already have, but I want to know whose pockets to avoid lining. Once they're dead, "separate the art from the artist" becomes a lot easier for me.
Of course I'd far rather there were nothing *to* know. I wish with all my heart that Edgar Rice #Burroughs and HP #Lovecraft were not raging racists, that Marion Zimmer #Bradley were not at the very least an enabler of child molestation and perhaps† a molester herself, that Joss #Whedon were a feminist in deed as well as word, that JK #Rowling believed the messages about equality and inclusion she gave a whole generation of children and their parents, that Neil #Gaiman were a kind and decent person who created mythologies to tell thoughtful stories about the human condition. But since they are what they are and were what they were, that's not an option.
There are writers I still regard as role models *as writers* even if I don't care for them much as people. Not monsters, for the most part, just garden-variety jerks. The way they put words together speaks to me, as I want my words to speak to my readers. I'm not in a hurry to give up what they've taught me by example.
Still. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend, and I'd rather that what I do have go to people I don't despise. Knowing is almost always better.
