In A Christmas Carol, Bob Cratchit earned 15 shillings a week, or 780 shillings a year.

With 20 shillings to the pound, that's £39 a year.

If you account for inflation over the last 180yrs, that's in the area of £32000 a year now.

Avg hrs per week is between 37.5 for an office job.

That works out to £16.41hr

Current minimum wage for an adult in the UK is £11.44

Bob Cratchit had a better paid job than most people do now and lived in abject poverty unable to support his family.

Even with the announced rise in min wage next year. It's still going to be around 22% lower than Scrooge was paying his staff.

This is a perfect example of capitalism and why it should not exist.

Capitalism has only existed in this form for less than a few hundred years.

We produce enough goods to safely and sustainably feed every single on the planet, to put a roof over everyone's head and to give them healthcare.

The only reason that's not happening is because of greed... because laws and govts have been corrupted to support capitalist interests instead of for the good of their people.

Burn it to the ground.

I have an app from my health insurer (TK-Ident), which sole purpose (!) is to identify me as an individual towards the insurer.

White people certainly have a lot of feelings about toppled statues. The last couple of weeks have seen article after article written about the subject (more on this later in the thread), culminating (one can only hope) in today's piece on Miguel's charges being dropped earlier this week.

Miguel is problematic for a variety of reasons, but selecting him out of the group of people present was very much a police grudge for his prominent presence at other actions. He was present at (but not involved in) the toppling of the Ryerson as well, plus a variety of other Indigenous-led actions that put him on police radar.

I am glad to see these charges dismissed, and saddened that his partner Barb passed away and did not get to see him vindicated on this front.

Here's to the other bullshit charges all going the same way.
