I had called the aunt holding the gathering that morning to tell her I was getting in the car and was on my way, and got told it would be better if I didn't attend. I haven't spoken to any of them since. That was the first time in my life I tried to get savage drunk, crying openly in public. That's how much it hurt.

A cousin told the family that if I, a trans woman, were allowed to attend, he would withhold his daughter's attendance. Without consulting with or giving any warning to me, my family made choices showing just how much I wasn't valued.
