  4. Upon arriving at Piper Spit, the first thing we see is some Serious Birders scoping out some little birb with their Serious Gear. They were super nice, informing us that their target was a Tree Sparrow! They range across much of North America east of the Rockies, so this was a very special visitor. Also a lifer for me!

The birb itself was also nice enough to stay and pose for pictures -- Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake, April 5

  7. Goose bath

I'm really not sure what they get out of it. Geese are pretty much as waterproof as ducks, as you can see, and they really have to work hard to get water inside their feathers -- Burnaby Lake, February 6

  9. I call this piece, "The Gull With The Pearl Earring".

But it wasn't the only gull around playing with weird junk! I wonder if humans lost that stuff long ago. Or maybe gulls themselves stole it, or crows, and it all ended up in the mud

  10. My best ever shots of a male Bufflehead, as he wandered to and fro by the pier. They are teeny ducks, and it's only from this distance that you can appreciate the rich iridescence on their face feathers!
