Friedrich Merz says that he will work with the SPD to change the election laws after 23 constituency winners are unable to take a seat. 18 of those 23 are from the CDU/CSU.
The rule was put in place after the last election in response to a Bundestag that was larger than at any point since reunification, with 137 overhang and balance seats needed to ensure proportionality. If yesterday's election had been contested under the old system, 53 overhang and balance seats would have been required.

The AfD has topped the poll in all five states in the former East Germany.
But they've not managed to finish on top in any former West German state, while in Berlin, they're all the way back in fifth place.

Olaf Scholz has called this exit poll a "bitter election result" for the SPD, congratulating Friedrich Merz on his election win.
No mention of going into opposition; the SPD is likely to continue to be in the German government, albeit as the junior party.

I'm struggling to find a state-by-state breakdown of the exit poll, but if this swing is uniform, then the AfD will likely have finished top of the poll in all five states of the former East Germany.

If this exit poll is correct, then a two-party grand coalition between the CDU/CSU and SPD is possible.
However, there are two parties that are just under that 5% mark, according to the exit poll. If either of them finish above 5%, then that two-party coalition becomes impossible, and a third party will be needed to form government.
It's going to be some hours yet until we know for sure what coalition options are on the table.

A reminder that the polls here in Germany close in 15 mins at 18:00 CET. An official exit poll will be released around 15 mins later.
I’ll be in the air by then, heading to London, so am hoping to find it won’t have turned out as badly as some, including me, fear.
Of course, any government led by someone as nakedly ambitious as Merz is not a good outcome, not least if he decides it suits him to break the firewall to the far-right.
He’s done it once, after all.

Mixed news, perhaps:1. Overall numbers are high, so perhaps people are taking this election & its potentially huge consequences to heart.
2. Particularly high turnout in a state likely to vote strongly for the AfD. Or perhaps more reasonable people there are saying “no, not in my name”.
