  1. #TikTok is testing a new #messaging tool called #bulletinboards, allowing brands and creators to share public, #onetomany messages with followers: The feature, similar to Instagram’s broadcast channels, enables creators to share updates and engage with followers directly. techcrunch.com/2025/06/27/tikt #tech #media #news

Hah! Reminds me of the old BBS days (late 80s, early 90s) where the host of one forum/board said in the guidelines "If you're posting here more than 10 times a day, then log out and phone HBO and ask for your own show. You are obviously too funny for us" 😂 😂

  3. Way back in the 1970s/1980s, before the Fediverse, before the web, there was an even older open network: "bulletin board systems" or BBSes.

You can watch a multi-part documentary about the history of the BBS network at:

The episodes are themed rather than chronological, so you can watch any episodes you want in any order.

Way back in the mid 80s I use to run Network ST (Nest), which was a networked group of Atari bulletin boards which spanned over 60 countries. Those were the halcyon days of my youth and early computing.

  5. 2./ I finally got my hands on these identifiers yesterday, and I was able to connect again to my favorite BBSs. In particular EndOfTheLineBBS.com. What a joy! And to see that my account still existed, after more than a year of inactivity. Thanks Nigel! I spent Saturday on BBSs and it will probably be the same for a good part of this Sunday.

  8. 1/. I used to visit BBS from a MSDOS-only machine. In June 2023 (or July), the power supply failed, and since it is a fairly rare model to find and it is very difficult to adapt one, the machine with its MSDOS hard drive remained there, inactive. In the meantime, an old hard drive where all my identifiers for the different BBSs were, also failed. And I no longer knew on which medium I had made a backup of this data.
    But..

  11. @GabeMoralesVR @[email protected] I used #Compuserve on many different platforms, mainly due to the free trials :) #Amiga, #Atari, later on #DOS and even the Atari 8-bit at the start. Initially though all my BBS activities were strictly 8-bit, on a #bbcmicro at school, the modem noise used to drive the librarian mad or at home on my #8-bit with an even slower connection. But it was all fun, I wrote my school computing class dissertation/report on online communities i.e. #bulletinboards

  12. August this year will mark about 33 yrs since I first went online and experienced #email #bulletinboards and anything else that was possible in #64k #300baud and about four colours (usually two: dark blue and light blue). Is it time to (partially) return to the art of letter writing on #paper? Email is great but it increasingly they feel like a flood of approximately four word responses, something that a physical letter would discourage.

"When I was a student in the mid-90s, there was a cubicle in one of the University ladies’ toilets that was 'the problem toilet.' It was like a problem page..."

Great comment by penguin pie on wowenthusiast's question about pre-internet physical bulletin boards.

  19. @inik this is exactly it, on the nose. Been in IT for 25 years, toiling in the early days of the #WorldWideWeb with #Newsgroups, #IRQ, #BulletinBoards and the “closed garden” approach (hello #AOL #Compuserve #Prodigy #MSN #AIM #ICQ how are you these days? 😬) through the chaotic and somewhat toxic nonsense of social media - just when you’ve seen it all, you get surprised. We were so positive…so optimistic. What were we thinking? #GenX #ShouldHaveKnown #Meh #Whatever #AhWellWeMeantWell

  20. The modem world refuses to be a single, stable object of analysis. In life and in memory, it was multiple, different, conflicting networks at the same time. This complexity was written into the architecture of the networks themselves. Before 1996, the modem world was not yet the internet, not yet a single, universal information infrastructure bound together by a shared set of protocols. In the days of Usenet and BBSs and Minitel, cyberspace was defined by the interconnection of thousands of small-scale local systems, each with its own idiosyncratic culture and technical design, a dynamic assemblage of overlapping communication systems held together by digital duct tape and a handshake. It looked and felt different depending on where you plugged in your modem.

The standard history of the internet jumps from Arpanet to the web, skipping right past the mess of the modem world. Platforms didn’t invent the social use of computer networks. Amateurs, activists, educators, students, and small business owners did. Silicon Valley turned their practices into a product, pumped it full of speculative capital, scaled it, and so far refuse to treat the lives we live through it with care.

Yes, my own first exposure to connected networks was via a dial-up modem to a Bulletin Board System. I still remember my first e-mail address, and how after dialling in, you'd create your account from a terminal screen (there were no GUI web browsers back then) and it was all ASCII text on a screen. The BBS was the gathering place to send and receive messages (we got actual e-mail addresses later on), share files, and a bit later on, the BBSs offered links to what was becoming the broader Internet. This was before the IBM PC XT had made any appearance, as I was on an Amiga 500 computer. Later came Netscape Navigator, and early graphics browsers. Yes, we were 'connected' long before we'd heard of The Internet.

In the words of one former sysop, the BBS was the original cyberspace. The stories from this era remind us that many different internets have already existed. An internet after social media is still possible; the internet of today can still become something better, more just, equitable, and inclusive—a future worth fighting for.

The history of the internet is repeatedly reduced to the story of the singular Arpanet. But BBSs were just as important—if not more.
