Do you or your family make any special dishes for the holidays?
I am half-Filipino. My mother is from the Philippines and my father, a Malaysian, like me.
Growing up, I was neither close to my mother’s or father’s side. However, between these two, I am somewhat culturally inclined towards my mother’s side through some of her simple heartwarming dishes that she cooked growing up as well as some of the Filipino songs she would play or the Tagalog words she would incorporate in her daily conversations.
Two of the simple dish my mother would prepare would be pasta or bolognese spaghetti and Buko salad.
1. Spaghetti
Originally, spaghetti is a form of pasta and a staple food of traditional Italian cuisine.
However, it also serves as one of the staple Filipino dishes.
My mother would usually make a batch of bolognese spaghetti occasionally and on New Year’s Eve, as that is what my maternal grandmother used to do while she was growing up.
It is rather simple and easy as well and she would go crazy with the cheddar cheese topping. Over the years, as she started to dwell into vegetarianism and eventually become one for a lifetime, she created her own variation of a vegetarian version.
2. Buko Salad
Adapted from https://www.kawalingpinoy.com/buko-salad/“Buko” salad is a form of Filipino fruit salad.
“Buko” refers to a young coconut fruit and “Buko” salad consists of the young coconut itself.
It is a simple dish which has many variations.
My mother would usually mix with nata de coco of various colours, avoiding the colourless ones, corn, a huge can of mix fruits and other canned fruits before finally mixing it with evaporated milk, cheddar cheese and “buko”.
She will the separate it into containers and freeze it and have it on New Year’s Eve.
Growing up, my family would be seated at the dining table with other dishes prepared on New Year’s Eve for us to dine in together at midnight and every year, these two dishes remains a staple.

Monatelang mobilisierten #Autonome Gruppen, hunderte von #NGO’s und #Initiativen gegen die Jahrestagung von #IWF und #Weltbank im September 1988 in #Berlin. Mit einer Vielzahl von Stör- und Protestaktionen bescherten sie den #Finanzchefs aus aller Welt eine Tagung im #Ausnahmezustand.
„Im September 1988 kommen sie alle her. Die Finanzchefs aus den kapitalistischen Zentren von #Tokio, F#rankfurt bis New York (…) die Schreibtischtäter aus den Schaltzentralen der Multis #Toyota, #Lockhead, #Siemens. Dazu #Minister, #Staatssekretäre, #Experten, J#ournalisten und ihre #Bewacher. Mehr als 14.000 werden es sein. (…) Die Verantwortlichen für #Hunger, #Ausbeutung, #Terror und #Kriege auf der ganzen Welt kommen in diese „Hauptstadt der Freien Welt“. Dagegen wehren wir uns: Unser Vorschlag: Verhindern wir diesen Kongreß!“ (Aufruf Autonomer Gruppen Westberlin)
Gegen das Treffen mobilisierten hunderte Organisationen und Initiativen. In #Westberlin begannen die Vorbereitungen schon drei Jahre zuvor. Besonders die seinerzeit starken autonomen Gruppen bereiteten sich intensiv vor, auch der Bundeskongress entwicklungspolitischer Aktionsgruppen #BUKO schloss sich frühzeitig der Kampagne an. Die Ankündigung der #Linksradikalen, den ganzen Kongress verhindern zu wollen, wurde von den #Sicherheitsbehörden sehr ernst genommen, denn die radikale #Linke Westberlins hatte aufgrund der #Hausbesetzerbewegung viel Erfahrung mit medienwirksamen öffentlichen wie auch militanten #Aktionen, #Demos und #Sabotageaktionen gegen #Banken und #Konzernzentralen.
Wieso waren der Internationale Währungsfond IWF und die Weltbank bei den Autonomen und internationalistischen „3. Welt“-Solidaritätsgruppen so verhasst?
Der IWF war – und ist – eine internationale Organisation unter Führung der #USA, die die #Verschuldungskrise der Länder des globalen Südens imperialistisch managen soll und mit Zwangsmaßnahmen wie Kürzung von #Staatsausgaben, #Deregulierung des #Bankenwesens und #Privatisierung von öffentlichen Einrichtungen wie #Sparkassen, #Bildungseinrichtungen, #Elektrizitätswerken, #Wasserwerken, #Telekommunikation die Rückzahlung von Milliardenkrediten westlicher Großbanken erzwingen soll – eine #Finanzpolitik, die #Hungerkrisen und #Verelendung bewusst in Kauf nahm und nimmt. Die Weltbank förderte unter dem Propagandabegriff „Grüne Revolution“ die #Industrialisierung und #Monopolisierung der Landwirtschaft und den Export von profitablen #Cashcrops wie #Soja, worunter die kleinbäuerliche #Subsistenzlandwirtschaft litt und der #Hunger im #Trikont zunahm.
In Westberlin bereiteten sich viele Gruppen mit eigenen Schwerpunkten auf Aktionen vor. So organisierte z. B. eine #Frauengruppe, die zu #Guatemala arbeitete, mit anderen Mittelamerikagruppen #Straßentheater gegen die Ausbeutung der Kaffeebäuerinnen, eine andere Frauengruppe plante eine Demonstration und Blockaden gegen den heute zu #Bayer gehörigen Schering-Konzern, der riesige Gewinne mit gefährlichen #Abtreibungs-„Medikamenten“ und #Sterilisationsprogrammen von Frauen im Trikont machte. Anti-#AKW-Initiativen organisierten einen Aktionstag gegen den Siemens-Konzern, der u. a. Turbinen für #Atomkraftwerke herstellte.
Einige Autonome Gruppen konzentrierten sich auf Banken als Nutznießer der Ausbeutung des globalen Südens, mehr als ein Dutzend wurden im Vorfeld des Kongresses mit Molotowcocktails angegriffen.
Die Aktionsformen während der Kongresstage waren sehr vielfältig. Von #Fahrraddemos und #Taxikorsos zum Kongresszentrum ICC über einen internationalen #Gegenkongress und Demos an den verschiedenen Aktionstagen bis hin zu schrillen Gute Nacht-Chören und #Trommelhappenings vor den Hotels der IWF-Chefs. Das „Büro für ungewöhnliche Maßnahmen“ und die populäre #Kabarettgruppe „3 Tornados“ sammelten auf dem #Kudamm ironisch Geld für die ach so armen IWF-Manager.
Am Sonntag vor Kongressbeginn fand mit fast 80.000 Teilnehmer:innen eine der größten Demonstrationen in der #Nachkriegsgeschichte Westberlins statt. Der Block der #Linksradikalen lief unter der Parole „IWF-Mördertreff“. Dieser Ruf erschallte in der Innenstadt überall und nachts vor den großen Hotels.
Rückblickend gesehen waren diese Aktionen der Beginn einer 20-jährigen Kampagne gegen die kapitalistische #Globalisierung mit späteren Höhepunkten wie #Seattle, #Prag und #Genua. (Prag im Jahr 2000 war insofern einzigartig, weil der IWF-Kongress aufgrund des massiven Widerstands der Protestbewegung vorzeitig abgebrochen wurde.)
Nach wie vor sind Milliarden Menschen von #Hunger und #Ausbeutung betroffen. Besonders denen im globalen Süden fügt die #Klimakrise immenses Leid zu, während die Verantwortlichen in den #Metropolen sich heute viel unbehelligter als 1988 oder in den Jahren danach treffen können. Es gibt also immer noch viel zu tun und die Erinnerung an die Aktivitäten gegen die IWF/Weltbank-Tagung in Westberlin kann eine wichtige #Anregung sein!
