  1. Tomorrow begins a new #BuildBetterBalance session.

    This fall prevention program for older adults meets online at 1pm Pacific for five weeks. Each week I share safety information and tools along with mindfulness and movement practices that are accessible and fun! Each class is 90 minutes with a brief break.

    You can still sign up. The class is offered through the Portland Parks & Recreation Lifelong Learning program and is only $10 for Portland residents or $14 for nonresidents.

    Fall prevention for older adults is vitally important because we’re more likely to be injured in a fall when we’re older. There are many simple changes people can make to reduce the risk of a fall.

    I offer a 5-week course called Build Better Balance that explores prevention from several different approaches. Each week I introduce new movement and mindfulness practices and we cover a safety topic. Since it’s online people can sign up from anywhere! Sessions are recorded in case you can’t make all 5 sessions.

    Cost for the full program is $10 for residents in the Portland metro area, only $14 for nonresidents! We meet for 90 minutes with a short break. Classes start at 1pm Pacific time.

  4. For the past several weeks I’ve been finalizing materials for a new fall prevention course for older adults. Because there’s overlap, the materials offer tools that can reduce incidence of motor vehicle accidents as well. Falls and MVAs are two ways that older adults can experience serious injury, particularly a traumatic brain injury (TBI), or death.

    I’ve called my program “Build Better Balance” and each class offers education about falls, safety, and risk reduction followed by meditation and movement practices. Mindfulness, Movement, and “Making Safe” are my building blocks!

    Today was the first class of the five-week series! It went very well and I’ve only spotted one big error I needed to correct! I was rushing a bit to get the first set of movement and meditation exercises in, but I just made it! One student said she really liked the hand exercises included today!
