  1. A list of Mahāyāna ideas you [arguably] won't find in the early Buddhist texts: Buddha-nature (buddhadhātu, tathāgatagarbha, etc), ālāyavijñāna, Avalokiteśvara, Amitābha, Yaśodharā (see Bhaddakaccānā/Bhadrakātyāyani), Pure Lands, Kālacakra initiation, & the Trikāya.

  9. We have spoken of the pure and true mind as being fundamental; it is the Buddha-nature, that is, the seed of Buddhahood. (pg. 140)

However buried in the defilement of flesh or concealed at the root of worldly desires and forgotten it may be, the human affinity for Buddhahood is never completely extinguished. (pg. 144)

  11. In #Mahāyāna #Buddhism, #BuddhaNature (#tathāgatagarbha) is not a hidden essence but the innate capacity for awakening present in all beings. It affirms the possibility of liberation without positing a permanent self. In this post, we examine how Buddha-Nature reflects the mind's potential to perceive reality as it is, free from delusion and clinging, and how it aligns with the process-based ontology of Buddhism.

  12. Very roughly, #Buddha Nature is the inherent ability of any sentient being to understand the nature of reality, to have compassion, ...

In Sanskrit it is called buddhadhatu which etymologically means bheudh (awakened/enlightened) + dhatu (realm of perception/state of awareness). Therefore, #BuddhaNature is the state of awareness of the awakened one.

  13. I think compassion is derived from being connected to our own innate core values of goodness or Buddha-nature. It may be triggered by empathy but that empathy is also a quality of our Buddha-nature, and remaining connected to what is innately good in us is what turns empathy into compassion instead of allowing our ego to turn it into regret, feelings of inadequacy, anger or pity or even burnout, which are less wholesome responses and reflect a dissconnect with our Buddha-nature.
