Community members at this encampment have been swept three times in the past 3 days. They have been awake for days, and many of their belongings are scattered, damaged, and wet.
Over the past month, Boston University has sent multiple emails to the DCR, BPD, MSP, and even the Mayor’s office, to ensure that unhoused folks in the BU area were violently removed for graduation weekend.
It was nearly impossible for the encampment residents to comply with the contradictory information they were given about where they could go and what time the sweeps would occur. Though all sweeps are acts of violence, the intentional ignorance and lack of coordination on the part of the various agencies working to clear the area showcased the wanton disregard for our neighbor’s humanity.
In the words of the DCR supervisor on scene, they “just need to disappear for the weekend.” Our unhoused neighbors are real people, who cannot simply disappear and shouldn’t be swept aside to fit the aesthetics of a university.
Boston University, a tax exempt institution that has gentrified Allston/Brighton, is using a system paid for by workers’ tax dollars to displace people who don’t have houses or apartments- all so that their prestigious ceremony can occur without homelessness lingering in the background.
BU should be ashamed to call itself Boston University while sweeping aside actual Boston residents to make Boston look pretty for families visiting from out of town.
