Strange “biotwang” ID’d as #BrydesWhale call
In 2014, researchers monitoring acoustic recordings from Mariana Archipelago picked up unusual whale vocalization with both low- and high-frequency components. It seemed to be #whale call, but sounded more mechanical than biological and has since been dubbed a "biotwang." Multi-species #machinelearning allowed team to identify the source of the biotwang: a species of baleen whales called #Brydes (pronounced "broodus") whales.

Confirming which marine animal makes a peculiar noise isn’t easy... #NOAA researchers saw a mysterious species called the #BrydesWhale 10 times... On 9 of the occasions that #whales turned up, the researchers also heard the biotwang."
