CW: Day 3 of 4 bikepacking from Boston to Bar Harbor - Portland to Rockland
First half of the ride is like fairy tale: beautiful sceneries, quiet and smooth roads and relatively flat. Portland is really beautiful! I kinda fall in love. Brunswick is also insanely cute with a great bike path along the river (also freeway - wish there’s sound barrier in between). The multi-use path even separates pedestrians and bikes!
While I was cruising along, I was thinking, how could Maine do this?
Wiscasett is the rest stop, and it claims to be the prettiest little town in Maine. Well the cafe I stopped at is cute and pretty. It’s simply called “TREATS”.
Then it brought me back to reality leaving Wiscasett. Busy and crap roads (Route 1 speed limit 55mph and the shoulder has gaps every 3 feet 🙄). Climbs on that road. No shade. All the good stuff. And it was getting really hot. Climbs today are also heavily mid- and back- loaded. I was struggling. I already modified the route last night to avoid some of the Route 1 but apparently it was not enough.
TBH that part was only about 8km but it felt like an eternity. And it was enough to bring my mentality down.
There’s not an inch of flat road from there to Rockland. Rolling hills felt very exhausting on the tour bike. Every small incline felt like 10+%, and there are a lot of them!
Now I felt like my legs are gone. Not sure how much I have in the tank. Tomorrow is another long day. I need to get more calories in myself and let my body do its own thing. Ciao.
