Producer Mervyn Leroy's original idea for casting the Wicked Witch for The Wizard of Oz was inspired by Disney's adaption of Snow White - he wanted to make her slinky + seductive. He thought he'd found the perfect choice with actress Gale Sondergaard who'd won an Oscar the previous year for her Best Supporting Actress performance in his film Anthony Adverse.
Others however disagreed, thinking witches should be ugly. They attempted to give Sondergaard 'The Ugly Treatment' with make-up, but the actress herself decided she no longer wanted the role."In those days I was not about to make myself ugly! I have no regrets".
