#TIL the actor behind Lt. #Hemmer, #BruceHorak, is also legally #blind
The #Aenar is my favorite #StrangeNewWorlds character, bar none.

Legally blind Strange New Worlds actor Bruce Horak (Hemmer) had news earlier this spring that I somehow missed:
- a crowdfunded documentary is being made about his ‘Boldly going’ as a disabled actor and visual artist
- he met with William Shatner, who has agreed for Bruce to paint his portrait. (Bruce paints as he sees with his very limited vision in one eye.)
Here’s a report from CTV from his hometown of Calgary filed in March.
“And he says he’s an example of how DEI works – for everyone.
“When you design for disability, everyone benefits,” he said, pointing out that phone texting started as something to assist the hearing-impaired and now it’s for everyone.”

Bruce Horak, the virtuoso legally blind actor, is leading a new Historical Canada Canadian Heritage Minute about the establishment of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB).
These short heritage dramatizations have been an institution since the 1980s and a couple of new ones continue to be added to the collection each year.
Horak best known onscreen for his main cast role as the Aenar Chief Engineer Hemmer in season one of Star Trek - Strange New Worlds. In addition to acting, Horak is a visual artist whose work shows his perspective from his limited ~10% vision in one eye.
CBC feature with short interview with Horak.

ICYMI Bruce also had a new demo reel posted in February. It’s great to see he’s been getting more television roles after his success on Strange New Worlds.

#GoblinMacbeth featuring #BruceHorak of #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds is playing at the #StratfordFestival until October 28th.
Super envious of all those who can get to Southern #Ontario to see this live #improvisational #theatre building on the Scottish play. This three person piece was sold out & held over in Vancouver.
Here’s a new trailer & a featurette on the making of #monster #masks at the link. #Shakespeare

Fate had it that last night I ended up sitting next to Bruce Horak for the closing night of Henry V! What are the chances?!
This show was really interesting, lots of cool moments throughout. Congrats to everyone involved on a great run.
Bruce was super kind, it was a pleasure getting to chat with him. Looking forward to seeing his work in Goblin: Macbeth.
