Today, five years ago at 11:15 sharp, I successfully defended my PhD thesis. I’m not usually one to celebrate an anniversary. But because this one has taken me by surprise—by how much time has flown—I thought it’d be nice to mark the occassion. I've made a mostly visual summary of my thesis to celebrate:

56KBPS?! That's madness. That defies the Shannon Limit. No good can come of this.

Pretty annoyed that the New York Times Spelling Bee game can't recognize the word Brownian as in Brownian motion. If I can retain that much from a chem class I took decades ago they can include it in a list of recognized words.

In 1827, botanist Robert Brown observed an odd jittery motion of particles as he watched grains of pollen floating in water under his microscope. He saw the random motion also with inorganic — which is to say definitely Not Alive — particles as well. But it was Einstein nearly 80 years later who figured out how to connect this observable motion to atoms. Einstein realized Brown’s particles were being constantly jostled by atomic collisions, and, with a little work, we could use those moving particles to determine Avogadro’s number. Steve Mould walks you through the whole story in this video. (Video and image credit: S. Mould)

I'm going to give #genuary a try this year. I probably won't get to every prompt, but it will be fun branching out from my usual fractal work.
For #genuary1 - "Particles", I immediately think Brownian Motion. This image traces Brownian Motion of several sets of particles.
Each particle within a same-colored set follows the same overall motion, but with slight randomness added for the string-like effect.
Even the background is made of Brownian motion of many particles at a much shorter step size. -

My distance and number of steps for a walk are approximations of the variation over the interval of my location, AKA total variation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_variation
They are finite because even though you may think it is so, I am not really doing a random walk (which would have infinite variation and finite quadratic variation). 😎
