On the other hand though I never once felt immersed in this world, nor did I feel like I related to or particularly understood the characters all that well.

It's a quick read, and not offensive in any way. Any fans of fantasy that haven't read this probably should at some point for the historical context of the genre if no other reason.

@sapphire I have finished A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Good, quick read. I never read this when I was younger so I came into it without any particular expectations. I found the style, which is much more that of a story being told rather than witnessing events, somewhat refreshing. I don't think there are many fantasy authors that would tell this story with such a surface-level approach these days.

I'm 31% through A Wizard of Earthsea. One thing that struck me pretty quickly is how much the style of this is that of a storyteller. By which I mean there is a whole lot of telling instead of showing. The portion of this book that tells of the protagonist's childhood is so quick, where it would have been probably a quarter of a book by most authors these days.

One thing I think I'm seeing with Saint Death's Daughter is that the "parts" really are parts. It feels almost episodic. They aren't different acts of the same story, they are sort of contained stories typically with some hook at the end to bring into the next part.

The concerns, then, from part 1 are mostly absent from parts 3 and 4. This leaves the book feeling a little bit like an omnibus.
