Up until the beginning of the #BronzeAge, there were not weapons which were significantly better than the ordinary hunting kit that anyone could have and anyone could make. Consequently, warrior elites, and with them, highly stratified societies, couldn't emerge, I believe.
Bronze isn't native to the Mediterranean where our idea of Europe originates; the nearest sources of tin were Afghanistan and Cornwall. So bronze was brought in by warrior groups coming in from the Eurasian steppe.

So, a week ago we (our best Polish-Bulgarian team) started re-digging this big yamnaya culture barrow in Plachi Dol in NE Bulgaria. The profile is now over 4 meters high and growing. In 70s/80s excavations five graves were recorded, including one with cart wheels. Lets see what is left inside.

A 3,200-year-old ceremonial kitchen discovered at Tava Tepe in Azerbaijan preserved ovens, cooking pots and traces of ancient meals. Even stranger, generations repeatedly rebuilt the kitchen in exactly the same place while preserving what came before.
