  1. We bought quite a big mid-century oil painting in a brocante in Rouen today. It was pretty cheap and doesn’t seem to be by a recognised artist, but we were really struck by its autumnal, mountain-top vista and the expressionistic, plein air style. (Buy what speaks to you, I say!)

    There’s something vaguely Scandinavian about it, perhaps, and the signature, partially covered by the painted frame, could be Stromme or something like that? It doesn’t look like a French surname to me.

    The lovely but rather eccentric proprietor of the shop didn’t have any paper or anything similar to wrap it in but eventually he came out with a raggedy but exceedingly bright old towel which he proceed to enshroud the painting in, and then tape it around with neon orange gaffer tape. I carried the four feet long screaming beacon of colour through the streets of Rouen, onto the métro for a 25 minute trip, and from there to our car. This was almost worth the small price of the painting alone…
