  1. Here is a message to all of my American and Canadian cuzzie-bros, whose parents or grandparents spent some time during the second world war in Britain as part of our shared heroic fight for freedom.

English women had three complaints about you Americans and Canadians:

    1) You were overpaid.
    2) You were over-sexed
    3) And you were “over here”

Thank you all and God bless you!

  2. 🔥⚡ Ah, the British Navy: masters of the seas, but apparently not of basic electrical safety. Who needs a lightning rod when you can just keep getting fried like fish and chips? 🍟🚢

  3. New book alert!

I grabbed this mainly for the notes on cannons, but HOOBOY is there a lot to read here. Keep your eyes out for some fresh posts on naval gunnery and sundry as I work thru this beast.

  4. The crew abandoned the ship, the #TrueConfidence, acc/to the #UK #Maritime #Trade Operations, an arm of the #BritishNavy.

“At least 2 innocent sailors have died,” the British Embassy in #Yemen said in a stmnt. “This was the sad but inevitable consequence of the #Houthis recklessly firing #missiles at #international #shipping. They must stop.”

  5. @kottke Thanks for the link! I am a big fan of Patrick O'Brians series of British Naval novels of the Napoleonic era with Jack Aubry and Stephen Maturin — one long continuous story. The first three, a trilogy of sorts, are:

    Master and Commander
    Post Captain
    HMS Surprise

  6. The Story of Able Seacat Simon

    >>The story of Able Seacat Simon of HMS Amethyst, the only feline recipient of the Dickin Medal.
The Dickin Medal is the highest award for bravery and gallantry that can be issued to an animal in British military service.<<

  7. Oh dear, more research. While listening to a podcast on the yellow fever epidemic, it mentioned that there was a British ship captured by the French and brought into Baltimore Harbor. It appears she is the #Roehampton. Not much more can be found except a few diplomatic messages from Jefferson. Anyone know anything?

  8. #Introduction. I am a recently completed PhD searching for a job/postdoc, just in time for twitter to implode and deconstruct years of networking! I study the long #18thc #BritishNavy (and #Maritime communities generally), touching on themes of #Masculinity and #Gender, #MaterialCulture, and military #Memoir.

I'm originally from the US, but have lived in the UK for the last decade. I'm working on my Italian so I can finally talk to my in-laws.

I do #Sewing and #Embroidery on the weekend.
