Brindlewood Bay Session 5:

We solved a murder mystery at an antique store silent auction. We did it in the same way we always do: collect random unconnected clues until we no longer have a penalty on the Theorize dice roll and then the most engaged player BSes a semi-plausible story around them. The roll succeeded, so we were correct: a rival antique saleswoman was the culprit. Not really sure why, professional rivalry, I guess.

@Ashigaru I can see how #BrindlewoodBay might not be for everyone. For my part #TheBetween uses the same system, but has a completely different vibe.

Brindlewood Bay Session 3:

We solved another mystery, this time involving a murder at a charity poker tournament.

Still not digging the game. I came up with a plausible solution to the mystery, but failed the Theorize roll so I was wrong. I’m not good at roleplaying an old woman. I’m not a cozy kind of person. I’m not a good fit for the game but I’m just trying not to interfere with the other players’ enjoyment.

Brindlewood Bay Session 2:

We fumbled our way through, solving the murder mystery with pretty scant evidence. A yacht captain had killed his employer to cover up an affair and love child with the employer’s wife.

I’m trying to be a good sport, but I’m not feeling this game at all. I’m not a “cozy” person, and you don’t solve a set mystery so much as BS a plausible solution and roll dice.

The group voted to keep going, so I’ve got at least another one or two sessions.

Brindlewood Bay Session 0 + 1:

Did character creation, safety tool review (not that it’s really needed with this particular group), mechanics intro, and then into the Dad Overboard mystery.

It’s interesting so far, but my frame of reference for investigations is mostly Call of Cthulhu and movies like Se7en and Silence of the Lambs. Kind of a different vibe… I shall endeavor to adjust.

Rien à voir, mais au fait, je ne vous ai pas dit : je mène *enfin* ma première partie du #jdr Brindlewood Bay ce dimanche, avec une équipe qui semble super motivée pour jouer sur la durée ! Je suis tout content.

Day 14 – Mystery

Honestly, most RPG adventures are mysteries in one sense or another. Most adventures involve the players discovering some scheme or exploring some mysterious place. What I’m going to talk about here is a mystery in the classic sense – a crime has occurred and the players need to uncover the culprit.

There are different methods that different styles of RPG have used to run mystery games. Here’s the three big ones:

Trad Games

In the large majority of RPGs, there aren’t any specific mechanics for solving mysteries. If you’re trying to find a clue by searching, investigating, or just talking to somebody, you have to make a skill roll (or other mechanic). If you fail, you don’t get the clue. Call of Cthulhu is probably the most common example of this kind of game.

In theory (and often in practice) this can gum up the works. If the players don’t have the clues, they can’t solve the mystery. There are ways to deal with this; the Alexandrian’s Three Clue Rule is probably the best known method.

Gumshoe System

In Robin D. Law’s Gumshoe system (Trail of Cthulhu, Esoterrorists) deals with the clue problem in the easiest way possible. Whenever the player investigates anything, they automatically get the clue. They can spend points to get extra information if they wish.

This removes the whole not finding the clue issue, but the players still need to interpret the clues to solve the mystery.

If you’re interested in messing about designing a game with Gumshoe, Pelgrane Press has a Gumshoe SRD that is free to download.

However, an easier method of learning and adapting Gumshoe is Against the Unknown by Thomas McGrenery. It’s essentially a stripped-down version of Gumshoe, with no setting. Like the SRD, it is under a Creative Commons license. I made a character sheet for it here.

Brindlewood Bay

A PBTA-style game from Jason Cordova, in which the players are all elderly women in the New England town of Brindlewood Bay, who solve local murders.

The GM is given a crime, a number of suspects, and a series of clues. The players interact with the places and people, by using their PBTA-style Moves. If they succeed, they collect some of the clues. The clues aren’t necessarily attached to a particular person or place, so the GM will need to improv which clues the players get.

When they have enough clues, the players can present their theory of the murder. They then make a Theorize roll, adding the number of clues to the roll, If they succeed with a 10, they’ve uncovered the murderer. The adventure doesn’t specify who committed the murder. The player’s theory automatically becomes fact.

This game is popular enough to have spawned a large number of “Carved From Brindlewood” hacks. Here’s a list at itch.io.

Which Style Should I Run?

No mystery here – whichever one you want.

I think that the old-school trad one works fine if you’re comfortable with the players’ ability to figure stuff out, and if they’re OK with the possibility of failing to solve the mystery.

Brindlewood Bay (and it’s many relations) is a delight, but it does require a bit of improv and the ability to think on one’s feet. Not all GMs (especially newer ones) would be comfortable with that.

I myself kind of lean toward Gumshoe, mostly because I like the process of making up the plots, but don’t find the whole rolling for clues thing that fascinating.

Just One More Thing…

If you’re running any style of mystery, I’d highly recommend GURPS Mysteries by Lisa J. Steele. For the most part, it’s not GURPS-specific. It’s mostly a lot of good advice and ideas for running mystery games that should work with any system.

Gestern Abend haben wir den ersten Fall in #BrindlewoodBay (erfolgreich) abgeschlossen. Der Fall wurde von uns gelöst und alle gesammelten Hinweise zum Schluss zu einer spannende Geschichte zusammengefügt.

Im Fazit kann ich sagen, ich mag das System und das Setting. #PbtA macht mir Spaß und bietet spielerisch sehr viele Freiheiten. Wir haben nicht alle Möglichkeiten genutzt, da wollen wir bei der nächsten Session mehr drauf achten.

Das mystische haben wir auch leicht angekratzt.

Bueno, que no lo comenté... ayer tuvimos sesión de abuelas de Brindlewood Bay. ¿Sabéis eso de una campaña que empieza con afables ancianas resolviendo misterios? Pues la trama se ha ido complicando y oscureciendo. Ahora el destino de medio país depende de tres señoras.

De verdad que es un placer cada sesión. Y pensar que la siguiente (dentro de tres semanas si todo va bien) será la última...

Nochecita de Brindlewood Bay de todo menos tranquila, que a veces hay que meter a las abuelas en dramas mientras intentan salvar el mundo de sectas griegas. Se nos está yendo a un par la pinza con esto, pero, sobre todo, estamos averiguando cosas y siendo conscientes de la gravedad de la situación... y lo mismo en la siguiente sesión conocemos en persona a la autora de los libros favoritos de nuestras investigadoras.

También me hace gracia cómo la relación de mi señora, Mildred, con su novio, Sam, ha pasado por varias etapas: acaramelados, luego él siendo protector cuando no hace falta... y ahora el nivel de toxicidad ha subido de forma alarmante. Hace un par de sesiones le hicieron sus compañeras un «amiga, date cuenta» y ha tardado, pero ya se da cuenta (estrés incluido).

Ayer hubo más Brindelwood Bay. Ya estamos en la recta final y nuestras señoras han entrado en el DRAMA. Le hemos dado a nuestra narradora tantas vivencias, desventuras y locuras que ahora vuelven para hacer las cosas más interesantes y tensas.

Desaparece la novia de una de nuestras abuelas, el novio de otra se pone sobreprotector, nuestra guerrillera está modo conspiranoia a full, la policía está haciendo su trabajo para variar... ¡Y se revela la identidad de la informante infiltrada en la secta!

Se vienen movidas chungas nivel sobrenatural griego. Cada sesión con Mildred, Muriel y Abigail es una joya.

Hoy hemos vuelto a Brindelwood Bay, la verdad es que se echaban de menos a las abuelas investigadoras... y eso ha hecho que nuestro arranque haya sido lento, pero en cuanto hemos pisado el acelerador...

Hemos tenido de todo: esqueletos, tiendas de pesca siniestras, ruedas pinchadas, un posible monstruo marino, una conspiración rural, discusiones, enfermedad...

Se viene el drama. Echaba de menos a nuestras investigadoras, qué delicia volver.

Gestern hatten wir in unserer Gruppe, mit der wir versuchen, verschiedene PnP-Systeme auszuprobieren, das erste Mal „Brindlewood Bay“ auf dem Tisch.

Wir haben uns jeder eine sog. „Kennerin“ erstellt und das war schon so ein tolles Erlebnis, der Charakter fühlte sich gleich richtig greifbar an. (Meine heisst Shirley O‘Keeve)

Ich bin wirklich gespannt, wie sich der erste Fall entwickelt, da es ja anscheinend auch ein sehr offenes und erzählerisches System ist.

¿Cómo ha ido el roleo esta semana? Bueno...

El martes tuvimos 50 Brazas. Tras ver que hay que sacar dinero para comprar provisiones y tener un buen morreo con el interés amoroso de turno (no preguntéis cómo besan los krakens en Caribdus), nos vamos a cazar narvales. Bueno, un narval, que es una buena bestia con poderes helados. Y una orca. Y sacarse un buen pellizco para pagar las provisiones e irnos a mares más cálidos.

Y hoy acabamos de termina sesión de Brindlewood Bay con nuestras señoras cotilleando en el pueblo vecino de Murky Point sobre un suicidio/asesinato, parroquianos de una taberna que miran mal a las extranjeras, librarse de señores borrachos dejándolos impresionados y encontrando una adorable golden retriever. Así que bien (aparte, mi personaje tiene una maldición de la que aún no es consciente... ella, claro, yo sí lo sé).

Home again from my first time running Brindlewood Bay! It was a publicly open session and WAY more folks showed up than I thought, but it turns out a game with 10 players is really fun!

No-one had played the game before and one person had never played a TTRPG before, but everyone did so well in "yes, and"ing and giving each other the spotlight.

Turns out the folks who want to play as little old ladies solving crimes together are generally lovely people!
