Damned guitarist Brian James has broken his last string, as we all will (either through age, illness, violence, misadventure or neglect). Their debut LP ("Damned Damned Damned") remains thee perfect Saturday Morning Record for me, and it’s all his songs from beginning to end (apart from the “1969” cover, of course). I know little of the man’s personal life but got to be friends with that buzzy bandsaw guitar, the mangled solos, the sense of wild abandon and velocity. I didn't particularly like the Damned - I saw them a couple of times are the Roundhouse and was a bit meh.
But I thought Tanz Der Youth - a band formed by the late Brian James and Alan Powell, who'd been in Hawkwind, were brilliant.
I think they only released one single (maybe EP) - which I must have somewhere - backing "I'm Sorry" with "Delay".
Both on this session from the Peel Show.
