Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of Brian Eno and J. Peter Schwalm’s album Drawn From Life.

It's not one of Eno's more well-known albums, but I adore it. Released near the end of my heavy psychedelic days, I obsessed about it at the time. Dark room, single candle, loud on headphones, pink microdot; it veers from chill to intense and back again.

Strange nights.

Nachhall des Freitags: Talking Heads – The Overload

Heute gibt wieder mal einen Nachhall des letzten GothDiscoInfernos, denn ein Song hat eine bemerkenswerte Entstehungsgeschichte, die ich beim Livestream schon im Chat erzählt habe und die ich nun hier nochmal für alle wiedergebe. Die Talking Heads gehören zu den Bands der Siebziger- und Achtziger-Jahre, die ich leider nicht intensiv verfolgt habe, was vielleicht daran liegt, dass sie aus Amerika kommen und ich mich damals hauptsächlich mit der britische Szene beschäftigt habe. Natürlich kenne ich ihre Hits wie „Burning Down The House“, „Road To Nowhere“ und „Psycho Killer“, ich besitze aber bis heute keinen Tonträger von ihnen. Goth sei Dank kann heutzutage vieles noch nachgeholt werden. Zum Beispiel die Geschichte um „The Overload“, dem letzten Song aus ihrem vierten Album „Remain In Light“ von 1980.

Die Talking Heads gründeten sich 1975 in New York. David Byrne (Gesang, Gitarre), Tina Weymouth (Bass) und Chris Frantz (Drums) hatten sich im Kunststudium kennengelernt. 1977 stieß der Keyboarder Jerry Harrison hinzu, der vorher bei Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers spielte. Ihr Debütalbum aus dem selben Jahr wurde einfach „77“ betitelt und enthielt „Psycho Killer“, wurde damals allerdings nicht sehr beachtet. Ab 1978 arbeiteten die Talking Heads mit Brian Eno zusammen, der als Produzent, Musiker und Songwriter fungierte. Mit ihm enstanden die Alben „More Songs About Buildings and Food“ (1978), „Fear of Music“ (1979) und „Remain In Light“ (1980), womit wir wieder beim Thema wären. Bekanntester Song auf „Remain In Light“ ist sicherlich „Once In A Lifetime“, das bemerkenswerteste Werk ist allerdings „The Overload“. Dieses Lied soll nämlich aus der Idee heraus entstanden sein, etwas im Stil von Joy Division zu schreiben. Nur hatte keiner der Beteiligten bis dahin deren Musik gehört. Sie sollen sich nur auf Berichte in Zeitschriften berufen haben. Wenn ich das Ergebnis höre, kann ich das kaum glauben, denn es trifft den Kern sehr gut. Es ist ein düsteres, schleppendes Lied, das am ehesten an „I Remember Nothing“ vom Album „Unknown Pleasures“ (1979) erinnert. Sogar Stimmlage und Gesangsstil von David Byrne kommen Ian Curtis recht nah.

Die englische Wikipedia hat den Absatz über „The Overload“ allerdings wieder entfernt, da die einzige bekannte Quelle das Buch „Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa: The Adventures of Talking Heads in the 20th Century“ von David Bowman aus dem Jahr 2001 war. Auch bei Reddit gibt es kritische Stimmen. Vielleicht ist es doch nur ein Hoax? Bitte macht euch selbst ein akustisches Bild bei eurem bevorzugten Streaminganbieter und schreibt in die Kommentare, was ihr davon haltet.

Das Album „Remain In Light“ wurde übrigens erst nach dem Tod von Ian Curtis (18.05.1980) und damit dem Ende von Joy Division aufgenommen und am 08.10.1980 veröffentlicht. An dem Album waren auch Gitarrist Adrian Belew (King Crimson, Frank Zappa, David Bowie u. a.) sowie (Fuck*) Robert Palmer (Percussions) beteiligt.

Two masters collaborating for the second time; most effectively on the beautiful title track, and the near 29 minute headfuck that is “An Index Of Metals”, which takes up the entirety of Side 2, which simmers and drones, becomes more distorted, disturbing and disfigured as it unfolds.

Truly one of the fifteen or so best #ambient #minimal albums of all time.

Muss ich viel über David Bowie schreiben? Nein. Wird das dann hier ein kurzer Beitrag? Vielleicht. Meistens fällt mir erst beim Schreiben immer mehr ein, mal sehen, wie das heute wird. Wir schreiben das Jahr 1997 und David Bowie veröffentlicht sein 21. Studio-Album „Earthling“ oder „EART HL I NG“, wie es in goldenen Lettern auf dem Cover steht, 30 Jahre nach seinem selbstbetitelten Debüt. In den Credits entdecken wir neben Bowies langjährigem Weggefährten Brian Eno den Gitarristen Reeves Gabrels, der auch an den Bowie-Alben „Black Tie White Noise“ (1993), „Outside“ (1995) und „Hours“ (1999) mitgewirkt hat. Seit 1997 ist Gabrels auch Live-Gitarrist bei The Cure und ebenfalls auf dem letzten Cure-Album „Songs Of A Lost World“ (2024) zu hören. Bei Bowie spielte Gabrels Gitarre und Synthesizer und war am Songwriting beteiligt, auf „Earthling“ an sieben der neun Songs.

Das Album „Earthlings“ vereint Drum and Bass mit Industrial- und Hard-Rock, Electronica und Jungle-Rhythmen. Das tritt schon beim grandiosen Opener „Little Wonder“, geschrieben von Bowie, Gabrels und Mark Plati, deutlich hervor. „Looking For Satellites“ aus der gleichen Feder ist dagegen ein ruhigeres Stück, bei dem das Gitarrensolo von Gabrels heraussticht. Bei „Battle for Britain (The Letter)“ dominiert wieder Drum And Bass und eine harte Gitarre, zwischendurch ist ein weirdes Klavier zu hören. Auch dieser Song wurde von dem Trio geschrieben. „Seven Years in Tibet“ ist eine Bowie/Gabrels-Komposition mit einer ruhige Strophe und einem gitarrendominierten Refrain mit fast wütendem Gesang und einer prägnanten Synth-Orgel. „Dead Man Walking“ (Bowie/Gabrels) hat wieder flotte Drum And Bass-Elemente und flimmernde Synthies. Der treibende Beat macht das Lied sehr tanzbar. Am Ende kommt ein Jazz-Piano dazu. „Telling Lies“ wurde von Bowie während der „Outside“-Sessions alleine geschrieben. Auch hier wurde ein Drum And Bass-Rhythmus verwendet, die Instrumentierung ist deutlich spärlicher als bei den anderen Songs, so dass Bowies Stimme eine tragende Rolle einnimmt. „The Last Thing You Should Do“ (Bowie/Gabrels/Plati) vereint erneut Drum And Bass mit ballernden Gitarrenwänden und diesmal spärlichem Gesang sowie sanften Keyboard-Teppichen. Der nächste Titel „I’m Afraid of Americans“ stammt vom bewährten Team Bowie/Eno und ebenfalls aus den „Outside“-Sessions. Er klingt bereits in der Album-Version so, als ob er von Trent Reznor remixt werden müßte, was er schließlich auch wurde. Sechs Remixe umfasst die Maxi-Single, davon fünf von Nine Inch Nails. Reznor tritt auch im Musikvideo zu „I’m Afraid of Americans“ auf, wo er einen Stalker spielt, der David Bowie verfolgt. Zuletzt kommt wieder eine Bowie/Gabrels-Komposition, „Law (Earthlings on Fire)“. Es ist ein Industrial-Track, fast EBM, mit kräftigen Beats und einer verzerrten Stimme. Ein würdiger Abschluss für ein sehr gutes Album.

„Earthling“ ist ein flottes Album, sehr elektronisch und rhythmusgetragen. Der Gesang variert von Song zu Song und die Gitarre gibt hier die entsprechende Würze. Ich finde es erstaunlich, dass relativ gesetzte Musiker – Bowie war 1997 50, Brian Eno 49, Reeves Gabrels immerhin 41 Jahre alt – so frische Musik machen. Naja, Bowie war schon immer sehr wandlungsfähig, auch musikalisch und Eno schon immer experimentierfreudig. Insofern kein Wunder, nicht mal ein „Little Wonder“ (das ist übrigens mein Favorit).

This is where Eno started to veer away from rock and leaving into the more ambient music that would come later.
There are 14 tracks here, and only five of them have vocals.

Robert Fripp, Phil Collins, and John Cale pitching in to add a little magic, and electric guitars are played with mallets, while the acoustic piano is fed through a Leslie speaker.

Robert Christgau (who I don’t always agree with) perhaps had the definitive description of this album, which sums it up perfectly:

“The aural equivalent of a park on the moon – oneness with nature under conditions of artificial gravity".

It’s a pretty great record, and a very important one in the grand scheme of Eno’s career.

Written about the civil rights leader #MartinLutherKingJr, "#Pride" received mixed critical reviews at the time, but it was a major commercial success for U2 and has since become one of their most popular songs.
