Cuando Barry murió, después de la ruptura, Brenda quedó devastada.
A pesar del divorcio, seguía queriéndolo profundamente.Su vida sentimental tampoco fue precisamente una historia de cuento.
Pero entonces llegó 1989.
Jim Sheridan estaba preparando *My Left Foot*, la historia del artista irlandés Christy Brown, que tenía parálisis cerebral y podía controlar únicamente su pie izquierdo.
Daniel Day-Lewis interpretó a Christy.
Brenda interpretó a su madre, Bridget Brown.
Y aquella película cambió su vida.
En 1990 ganó el Óscar a la mejor actriz de reparto.
Tenía 44 años.
Se convirtió en la primera mujer irlandesa en ganar un Óscar de interpretación.
No era una recién llegada.
Era una mujer que había pasado décadas trabajando mientras cargaba con una historia que prácticamente nadie conocía.
Y entonces Hollywood descubrió a Brenda Fricker.
Llegaron películas estadounidenses y papeles importantes.
Pero para millones de personas su rostro quedó asociado para siempre a un personaje muy diferente.
La mujer de las palomas de *Solo en casa 2*.
Una mujer solitaria que vivía en Central Park rodeada de palomas y que acababa convirtiéndose en amiga de Kevin McCallister.
Es curioso.
Una mujer que había sufrido tanto terminó interpretando a un personaje que, precisamente, hablaba de la soledad y de volver a confiar en alguien.
Después llegaron *The Field*, *A Time to Kill*, *Veronica Guerin*, *Cloudburst* y muchas otras producciones.
Pero Brenda nunca se convirtió en una estrella de Hollywood al uso.
Era una actriz de carácter.
Una de esas personas que podían aparecer durante diez minutos en una película y hacer que te acordaras de ellas durante años.
Y mientras el público la veía interpretar a madres, mujeres solitarias o personajes entrañables, casi nadie conocía la dimensión de lo que había ocurrido en su vida.
Ella tampoco parecía tener demasiadas ganas de contarlo.
Hasta que llegó 2025.
A los 80 años publicó sus memorias.
Y entonces apareció otra Brenda Fricker.
La mujer que escribió sobre los golpes de su madre.
Sobre el profesor que abusó de ella cuando tenía ocho años.
Sobre las violaciones.
Sobre las autolesiones.
Sobre sus intentos de suicidio.
Sobre sus ingresos psiquiátricos.
Sobre la tuberculosis.
Sobre los seis embarazos que perdió.
Sobre su marido.
Sobre la culpa.
Sobre la depresión.
Y sobre cómo había conseguido continuar.
El libro no es el relato de una mujer que se presenta como víctima durante 300 páginas.
De hecho, sorprende precisamente porque Brenda conserva un humor negro y una capacidad de reírse de sí misma incluso cuando habla de cosas espantosas.
No se presenta como una heroína.
Ni siquiera parece demasiado interesada en que la llamemos superviviente.
Simplemente cuenta lo que ocurrió.
En los últimos años su salud empeoró considerablemente.
Durante la preparación de sus memorias sufrió numerosas caídas y llegó a romperse ambos hombros, uno de ellos varias veces.
En una entrevista de 2025 explicó que había sufrido once caídas.Su última película fue *The Swallow*, dirigida por Tadhg O'Sullivan.
Y quizá sea una despedida bastante apropiada.
Interpretaba a una mujer solitaria que tenía que enfrentarse a su pasado.
Brenda Fricker murió en Dublín el 16 de julio de 2026, a los 81 años.
Cuando se habla de ella, es fácil quedarse con dos imágenes.
La madre de Christy Brown que le dio un Óscar.
Y la señora de las palomas de *Solo en casa 2*.
Pero esas dos mujeres eran interpretadas por alguien que había pasado por una infancia marcada por la violencia, por abusos sexuales, por violaciones, por enfermedades, por depresión, por autolesiones, por intentos de suicidio y por pérdidas que la acompañaron durante toda su vida.
Y aun así siguió delante de una cámara.
Siguió haciendo teatro.
Siguió trabajando.
Siguió riéndose.
Siguió viviendo.
Quizá esa sea la parte más importante de su historia.
Brenda Fricker no fue una actriz secundaria.
Fue una de las grandes actrices de carácter de Irlanda, la primera mujer irlandesa que ganó un Óscar y una mujer que consiguió construir una carrera extraordinaria después de sobrevivir a una vida extraordinariamente difícil.
Y durante muchos años, casi nadie sabía lo que había detrás de aquella sonrisa.

Brenda Fricker: The first Irish woman to win an Oscar
Brenda Fricker became the first Irish woman to win an Academy Award for her performance in the film “My Left Foot”. She began her career with parts in Ireland’s first soap opera Tolka Row, ITV’s Coronation Street, and became a household name as the nurse Megan Roach in Casualty on the BBC. Her friend and fellow actress Anna Friel pays tribute.
The BBC’s long-serving correspondent David Willey was a renowned authority on the Vatican, covering the lives and deaths of five popes. Before he settled in Rome, David had travelled widely for the BBC, reporting from Algeria, the Vietnam War and China just after the communist revolution. Two of his colleagues, former Chief News Correspondent Kate Adie and International Editor Jeremy Bowen, share their memories of working with him.
The name David Austin is forever indelibly associated with the rose growing business. He created some of the most sought after roses, naming new varieties after fictional or real-life people, including Gabriel Oak from Far From the Madding Crowd, the actress Dame Judi Dench and ceramicist Emma Bridgewater - who pays tribute to him alongside Gardeners' World presenter Sue Kent.
Wally Funk broke records as the oldest person to go to space onboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin Rocket in 2021. In the early 1960s she was part of a group of women known as the Mercury 13 who were tested to see if they could compete with male astronauts for a place in the American space programme. But the project was abandoned and her hopes dashed. Loretta Hall, who co-wrote her memoir, tells us her story.
