There wasn't any power source in the #breaker / #counter box, so I had to add an outlet to power the #homeassitant #glow . I took the power from the nearest distribution box so it is a little cleaner. Unfortunately I didn't have new outlet frames, so I had to reuse an old (and very ugly) one. -

From the It-Never-Rains-but-It-Pours Department: At exactly the point I went upstairs to go to the bathroom last night, I realized the #electric fan turned off in our bedroom. I opened the door to ask Wife1 why she had done so only to realize she was asleep. Then I noticed the bathroom lights were dimming...turning on the lamp in the bedroom made it flash on and off...and phones were no longer charging. Rest of the house is fine, so I am pretty sure we're looking at a bad #circuit #breaker in the downstairs panel - which I'll have to fix sometime in between Wife1's second follow-up appointment and Wife3's play, which opens tonight in the city. -

DC MCBs are appropriate for loads up to around 125A, above this current use MCCBs which are larger, more robust and can handle very high fault currents. They normally also have large screw fixings suitable for M8 ring terminals making a reliable connection.

Some inverters have large input capacitors and can draw an inrush current of several thousand amps when the breaker is switched on. This can destroy the breaker contacts. If high inrush currents are encountered consider putting an appropriately rated resistor across the breaker contacts to precharge the capacitors before the breaker is operated.

Breakers are designed to protect cables and infrastructure. Ensure battery cables are rated at or higher than that of the breaker you are using. Enclosed cables or cables running together should be derated according to “group factors”.

Battery systems can deliver very high fault currents so ensure that breakers can handle these fault currents and disconnect safely. A typical 280AH LiFePO4 cell can have an internal resistance of 0.17 milliohm so a string of cells can deliver fault currents of about 10KA before something melts. Don’t use too short battery cables as their length can add resistance to limit the peak fault current.

When connecting DC MCBs to stranded cable use crimped bootlace ferrules on the cable to ensure a reliable and low impedance connection. Also ensure that the connections are properly torqued. As a guide MCBs up to 63A should be torqued to about 1.8Nm and those up to 125A 3Nm. Where possible check manufacturer’s data.

Where DC battery breakers are used with hybrid inverters the current flows are bidirectional. In this case non-polarised breakers should be used.

Many DC breakers are polarised and use an internal magnet to direct the breaking arc into the arc suppression chute they should therefore be connected to match the polarity of the power source – normally the solar panels or battery system. Failure to do this can result in the breaker failing to disconnect properly and a possible fire.

When solar panels are used in parallel stings then string fuses or non-polarised breakers should be used if there are more than two strings to limit the maximum current that can be backfed into a faulty string from the other strings.

Solar panels essentially operate as constant current sources where the current is roughly proportional to light intensity. A short circuit will not normally increase the current, therefore a DC circuit breaker will not normally trip on a single string but they can be used for isolation.

We didn’t see much of #Breaker most of the time. It was more of a #Blighter #campaign.
We learned that Blighter wanted to see Breaker dead. But we didn’t want to play Blighter’s game, so we reached out for Breaker to ask her how to kill Blighter. She told us. But for a price. Of course. The specialist she hated most.
We mourned our loss and betrayed Breaker at the first opportunity, but in the Battle of #Skydagger the Broken Blighter was burnt to ash.
And the #Legion saw another spring. -

We took the northern route over the mountains. Our Chosen was #Shreya, our Broken were #Blighter and #Breaker.
We spend a very long time in #Plainsworth preparing for the mountains (four or five rounds, I think) and only left when the mayor of the city betrayed us because he was blackmailed by the Broken. -
