Hi! I'm new here and looking to make new friends! I can be found elsewhere in the fediverse, but the server I'm usually on doesn't feel like the right place for spirituality.
I was brought up Catholic and I rejected spirituality altogether for long time. But recently, I've found my way back to it on my own terms. In practice this looks like learning #tarot, but I've been dabbling in minor rituals a little as well. There's a decent chance I'll post some #art or talk about #books or #dance. I'll mostly avoid politics and how they affect my life, though it may come up in the context of tarot readings (in which case I use CNs).
Other things to know about me:
I'm 40 years old, #trans, #bi / #pan, #polyamorous, and #AuDHD.
I'm originally from Germany 🇩🇪 (I've lived in 5 states, so it's hard to be specific). I've lived in the US 🇺🇸 for the past decade, where I'm on my fifth state, too (most recently #Colorado, which I *love*). I've also lived in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and Scotland 🏴.
I'm functionally bilingual (#English and #German). I mostly understand #French 🇫🇷 but haven't spoken it in 20 years. I've learned #Japanese 🇯🇵 to about JLPT-4 level but that, too, is over a decade in my past. More recently, I've picked up some #BrazilianPortuguese 🇧🇷 (Babble says I'm around B2 level) but haven't really used it much. I can't keep up with written Japanese but I can get the general gist in all the other languages. 😄
I used to do federally funded #RenewableEnergy research but if you've been following the news, you may have guessed that I've had to pivot to other topics.
In my personal life, I spend most of my time dancing #BrazilianZouk, painting, reading, and chilling with my three #cats: Charmander (orange, that's him in my profile pic), Anubis (black), and Trixie (technically brown tabby but mostly white).
My favorite book genres are #fantasy and #scifi, but I also read a lot of #romance (mostly #queer), and I try to read at least one non-fiction book per month.

When I got into the localization business, I'd never in a gazillion years would have thought I'd want to work with game loc.
I wasn't a gamer per se as a kid. I had a mini game, but that was it. I hated losing, and I didn't have fun with games because of all of that pressure to succeed.
But here we are! Beginner cozy gamer, fresh out of a fun, informative game loc course. Kinda addicted to The Sims 4.
One main takeaway from the course:
There's lots of kinds of games out there! Including educational games, which is often not a path most translators think of pursuing when they consider game loc.
Below is my certificate 😍

Hi! Renata here. I'm a Brazilian English-Portuguese (and Portuguese-English) translator based in the Greater Rio de Janeiro area. I'm autistic, and my brand new goal in life is to work with more neurodivergent business owners. I specialize in audiovisual content and health & wellness, and I've been at it since 2017. This is my account to talk biz, sometimes in all seriousness, at times not. If you're a neurodivergent entrepreneur, I'd love to connect 😍

Latin letters 𝘬, 𝘺, and 𝘸 were formally added to Portuguese alphabet in 2009.
The longest word in Portuguese 🇧🇷 🇵🇹 is 𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦, meaning unconstitutional.
English words, embarrass & zombie (as in stupid russians) were derived from Portuguese, 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘢ç𝘢𝘳 & 𝘻𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪.

In #BrazilianPortuguese we have two options for gender neutral pronouns:
- «elu» (which sounds kinda horrible when you first hear it), and
- «ile» (which sounds a bit more okay).Buuuttt, what if we play around with that last vowel in «ile»?
That is, what would «ilo» and «ila» mean?
I'm tempted to use them for #demiboys and #demigirls respectively but I'm not sure of there's such a need.
Also, «ilo» and «ila» sound a bit like «i[r]-lo» and «i[r]-la», respectively, which mean something like «to go [to] it». I doubt there are many cases where this similarity would lead to ambiguity but it's a fun coincidence.
For the #Leipzig fans, it's: ir-[to go-INF] lo-[OBL.SG.M]

Looking for a translator on a voluntary basis in exchange for exposure in a published ebook & across social media. It's a short story for kids (c. 4,300 words) + you can translate it from either English or Spanish into French or Brazilian Portuguese.
Please DM if interested!
If the ebook is successful, you could translate the whole story short collection & that would be paid work.

Even though I'm Brazilian, I really think #Duolingo should have separate courses for #BrazilianPortuguese and #EuropeanPortuguese. They're different enough to warrant that. Some people just prefer/need to learn European #Portuguese, and we have to respect that.

I’ve been learning a language - Brazilian Portuguese - since summer using Duolingo and I’m quite surprised at its effectiveness in teaching the rudiments of a language with minimal effort and little or no expense on the part of the user as compared to other methods of language learning I’ve used in the past. What I find odd, though, is that I’ve made so much quicker progress since I moved from the paid version to the free version 🤫

I'm trying to learn Brazilian Portuguese. If there's anyone in the UK with simple Brazilian Portuguese books such as children's books they'd like to get rid of, that would be great. I would pay for postage and am happy to pay a fair price towards the books.
