  1. Good morning fediverse!

Cooking-on-a-budget tip for y'all: You can totally eat #kale stems!

They'll take longer than the leaves to cook, so chop them small (as you would green onions) and then saute them a while to soften them. I sometimes add them when I start a #mirepoix, where they'll disappear.

They're basically just long skinny #broccoli stems; it doesn't make much sense to toss them.

  5. #TIL - you know those #SilverDollar plants, the ones that dry with thin translucent white seed pod things? #Lunaria annua? They're not native to the americas, but I have fond feelings towards them.

    Anyway:

    They're #Brassicaceae - same family as #broccoli and #cauliflower and #BrusselSprouts and #cabbage etc

  10. #SeaRocket - in #mustard family #Brassicaceae. It's not native & has been cultivated in #coastal gardens here. Some have spread to local beaches but they aren't a huge threat to native plants; they seem to coexist with seaside native plants. Their fruits/seeds float & disperse by water.

  23. Harvester ant straining to pull a mustard infructescence back to its nest. Possibly Pogonomyrmex salinus based on jaw dentition but this is beyond my expertise. Species ID in this group (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis complex) is easier if you photograph the nest, too. But I didn't know that. 44.
