The bit that you skip #255: Brand New – Degausser

Before youtube, the only chance you had to catch a video was either MTV (or any of its knock offs) or waiting ages to download on dial-up or any P2P program like limewire, bearshare, and the like.

There were a couple of websites in the early 00s where you could download videos with reasonable quality. Besides getting whatever was hot, you could find new bands. Through HDPvideos I found Strapping Young Lad and Brand New. Strapping I downloaded as a friend in Nottingham highly recommended them, Brand New I downloaded just by the title of the song: the quiet things that no one ever knows.

I loved the title, but the song wasn’t what I expected. So I never bothered with them.

Years later, in late 2007, I was supposed to move to Sheffield, but a company that liaised with the University of Sheffield lost my papers (blaming it on the floods), so I lost the beginning of the academic year and had to wait for another year.

I had insomnia due to this, so I used to drive late at night, or walk. I also would spend the night reading magazines. One particular music magazine had an article about a band’s heavy usage of pedals on the studio. It was Brand New and the album was The Devil and God are raging inside me. So I “acquired” the album and was floored by it. I was obsessed with the interweaving storyline, the instrumentals, the screaming, the children’s chorus in Degausser, the brutality of the lyrics. I bought the album, paying through the nose for a copy with an extra track.

Jesus Christ, the archers bows have broken, and Degausser are my all time fave Brand New songs and inspired me to write a novel about a tragedy. And tragedy befell the band in 2017, when Jesse Lacey got hit with two sexual misconduct accusations. The band split and only recently reunited.

I know a lot of people who were much greater fans of Brand New than me that took it really bad. People who had tattoos of their intense emocore lyrics. I know it affected me, as the album was integral to my novel, but it’s not as much as these people I know were affected. And really, in the end, it’s the victims who are really the most damaged here, so our particular love of band is but a mere afterthought when there’s people whose life was inexorably changed.

I still listen to Degausser on a regular basis. I find it cathartic and I always want to scream along. Life is hard, and I need a song as intense as Degausser to let it all out. I’m conflicted, though.
