Others insist going braless is healthier. Still others warn that bras may contribute to cancer or other health problems. The reality, according to current scientific research, is considerably less dramatic.
The evidence suggests that for most women, the choice to wear a bra or go without one is largely a matter of comfort, support, and lifestyle rather than a significant health concern.
The Cancer Myth
One of the most persistent claims surrounding bras is that they increase the risk of breast cancer. This idea has circulated for decades, particularly regarding underwire bras and tight-fitting garments.
However, major medical organizations have found no credible evidence linking bra use to breast cancer. Researchers have not identified any mechanism by which bra-wearing increases cancer risk, and large-scale reviews have failed to support the claim (American Cancer Society, 2025).
For women concerned about cancer prevention, factors such as genetics, age, alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical activity remain far more significant considerations than bra use.
Why Women Wear Bras
The strongest scientific argument in favor of wearing a bra is not disease prevention but physical support.
Breasts contain relatively little muscle tissue and are supported primarily by skin and connective structures. During walking, running, or other activities, breast movement can create discomfort, particularly among women with larger breasts.
Research has consistently shown that supportive bras, especially sports bras, reduce breast movement and exercise-related pain (McGhee et al., 2024).

The Case for Going Braless
The scientific evidence indicates that going braless is generally safe for healthy women.
Medical experts note that there are no proven health risks associated with choosing not to wear a bra. Women who go braless may experience greater comfort, improved ventilation, less skin irritation, and fewer pressure-related complaints from shoulder straps or tight bands (Cleveland Clinic, 2025).
For women with smaller breasts, the difference between wearing a bra and going without one may be negligible from a physical standpoint.
The decision often comes down to personal preference rather than medical necessity.
What About Sagging?
Perhaps the most controversial question is whether bras prevent breast sagging.
Unfortunately, the science does not provide a simple answer.
Breast shape changes over time because of aging, genetics, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, smoking, and natural changes in skin elasticity. While bras can temporarily support breast tissue and reduce movement, researchers have not established that routine bra use permanently prevents sagging (Rouillon, 2013).
In short, a bra can support the breasts while it is being worn, but it is not a proven long-term anti-aging device.

If a woman decides to wear a bra, fit matters more than style.

There is no compelling evidence that bras prevent breast cancer, and there is little evidence that they permanently prevent sagging. The best choice depends on individual anatomy, lifestyle, activity level, and personal preference.
In the end, the healthiest option may simply be the one that allows a woman to move comfortably through her day.
