Whether it’s the World Cup or Olympics, there’s always a display of blind loyalty for one’s “own” country.

That just because we happened to be born in some place thus requires a pledge of allegiance? As if we were born in the right place and must perpetuate that way of doing things.

I don’t fault anyone for knowing and supporting some players and a team that happens to be playing for “their” nation. Or even for pondering about a person’s upbringing leading them to their athleticism.

But rooting for a team simply because we happen to be born there?

My recommendation? Pick a country’s team that you have no relationship to, and enjoy the sport for what it is.
