  1. Here is yet another version of "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray #Bradbury: bsky.app/profile/bowiesongs.bs - this (the full text) was the very first publication of the short story in Collier's magazine in 1950, with the date still set to 1985, not 2026 to which it was changed days later when it appeared in "The Martian Chronicles".

  2. If you did not read There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury today - the most appropriate day to read it ever, never to be repeated again - then you'd better get on that right now.

  3. Hey everybody, in case you missed it, today: August 4, 2026 is the exact day Ray #Bradbury picked to end the world, 76 years ago.

"There Will Come Soft Rains" 's title was a nod to Sara #Teasdale's "There Will Come Soft Rains," written in 1918 in reflection of the losses of the First World War and the influenza pandemic, and premised that the natural world would barely register humanity's disappearance.

Here's a pdf link, in case you'd like to reread it. It, in my opinion, is among the best short stories every written. (Granted, I'm a Bradbury fan girl.)

  4. Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” published 76 years ago about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast: short-stories.co/@raybradbury/ = a shortened version of the short story, also summarized in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_Wi #Bradbury #dystopia #shortstory

  5. I often cite Ray Bradbury's brilliantly poignant short story "The Flying Machine" when talking about this ill-considered headlong rush for an "AI"-mediated society that is being thrust upon us.

Today I learned there's a version of that must-read short story in graphic short story format. Take the time to read and appreciate the point Bradbury was trying to make.

  8. I notice in the YouTube comment section someone also credits Ray Bradbury for having a similar idea in Something Wicked This Way Comes. #Bradbury was also brilliant.

  9. @gutenberg_org 🧵The Martian Chronicles

  10. I keep thinking of it in the context of present AI "art" rant.
One of my friends told me that she was fine with the idea of an artificiall intelligence doing her commissions, as long as it did it well enough.

But for me.. Idk, it just sounds terrible. For me, there's always a person behind any piece, their unique method, and this is no less important than the quality and accuracy of this piece.
Truly, when people pass away, they take with them a personal way of solving life's problems

  11. We are presently 21 months and change from August 4, 2026 - “There Will Come Soft Rains” and 23 months from “The Million Year Picnic.”

  12. Ballard's Drowned World is 1962.

So far it gives me strong Bradbury, Pynchon, and Delaney feels.

Ray and JG were contemporary and I think it shows. In a good way!

It reminds me a lot of Dhalgren (1975), which I may rereread next because I kept losing interest carting around an enormous paperback that has since disappeared. No gay sex yet tho.

I won't reread Gravity's Rainbow (1973) again (I think), there's others I want to cover. Still have that kilo of a tome.

This is all probably somehow the fault of Paul Bowles.
