Look what yesterdays rain brought out!
This is a smaller box turtle. He was disturbingly lightweight. They only come out when the humidity is above a certain point. And it’s been a very, very dry spring.
He was in the middle of the road. And of course, facing straight down the center. I moved him into the best side for him, whether he thinks that or not is another story.

Every time my trident has an issue I curse the box turtle and assume it’s the failure.
It’s nearly always something else.
This time I got a tiny piece of filament stuck in the toolhead extruder gears in an invisible spot.
…But I definitely spent a day blaming the box turtle for failing to load filament.

Well the #BoxTurtle is working, but I’m not out of the woods yet.
After calibration I got through 7 layers of this 12 layer print and 20+ automated filament swaps before getting a clog somewhere in the toolhead during a filament swap that I wasn’t able to easily clear.
The BT macros detected it and paused the print to give me a shot at recovery but it wasn’t possible without tearing down the toolhead.
(It’s just as slow and wasteful as I expected it to be)

My #BoxTurtle filament changer is fully built and flashed and has passed all the basic functionality checks.
Tuning all the parameters for loading and unloading filament is up next. We’ll see how fiddly that is.

Well. Somehow the filament sensor I installed on my Xol-metrix has worn out before I even configured it. The ball no longer triggers for some reason.
I had gone in to set it up so I can get moving again on the box turtle but I guess I’m going to try ramming with the buffer instead.
I don’t like how fiddly Xol-metrix is to assemble and would probably print up an anthead or a4t before reprinting it.

Nothing like trying to print clear filament to prove that your nozzle isn’t really purged…
I can’t even recall printing blue or teal filament on this machine and I would certainly prefer that my #BoxTurtle status LEDs were shining through a neutral colored diffuser.

Sold my Bambu P1S, down to my Vorons now.
Much better this way. I didn’t like Bambu the company much even before buying the printer and never liked the printer much once I had it.
Time to get back to building my #BoxTurtle for the trident and figuring out how to delete the Bambu network plugin out of my OrcaSlicer config.

TIL about openams, which lets you plug a Bambu AMS into a klipper printer.
Between this and the #BoxTurtle, the klipper plugin to run the anycubic color engine, and the venerable ERCF, #klipper folks are spoiled for choice.

The frame for my #BoxTurtle built up ok.
I have one sticky port in my hub. The filament will push through but requires quite a bit more force than the others. I haven’t looked at the CAD on that one and may reprint this part but I’m moving ahead for now.
The tolerance expectations are a little silly, the four trays are 90mm wide and are supposed to fit into a 360mm frame rail, so I guess plan on being absolutely perfect.

#BoxTurtle note: buy the more expensive n20 motors from the guy in the US. It seems Amazon and Triangle Lab ship wrong/crappy ones that can't overcome the torque to turn the printed gears.

Well this seems like it might work for wire management.

Steps left on the rebuild:
- finish removing old wiring and z endstop
- finish crimping and assembling Xol and install
- setup CAN and flash the ebb36
- update my configs for the new CAN board
- try tuning sensorless or setup some end stops
- correct input shaping for new config
- recreate a billion filament profiles in orcaslicer
Then I move onto #BoxTurtle stuff…

Got home today and saw my box turtle had arrived!
Inside is a very typical LDO kit with everything bagged and tagged.
Any more than that has to wait for me to finish my trident rebuild. I have some Beefy Idlers printing now, then back to printing Xol bits.

My #boxturtle kit preorder shipped ahead of schedule. I wasn’t planning on having it for another month! I must have gotten a leftover batch 1 unit…
Now I really need to get moving on my trident upgrades.

What made you decide on the #BoxTurtle instead of something like the Carrot Feeder, which is more popular? I've never heard of the BoxTurtle.

I haven’t updated the software on my :voron: Trident in a year.
With hardware like that I’m very much of the mind: “if it’s working, don’t mess with it”
But if I’m going to add a #BoxTurtle, now’s probably the time… let’s see if I can remember how to do this.

My goal is to sell the P1S this year and replace it with another open source printer. I ordered a BoxTurtle kit last night to add an mmu to my :voron: trident as the first step. The AMS is the only thing I like about the P1S.
I’m excited to get back to a printer project. My voron build was a year ago and it’s been dead reliable since then so I’ve had nothing to do!
Next I need to finalize my plans for modifying the toolhead to support a cutter and a filament sensor.
