Dominic Sessa on playing Bourdain: kitchen rippers, 70s barfly energy and channelling a complex icon

After his breakthrough in The Holdovers in 2023, Sessa has gone back to the 70s again for Tony, the biopic of bad-boy chef and Kitchen Confidential author Bourdain. And, he says, a big part of him…

"Something more behind these faded street food signs will reveal itself over time. That is the magic of cross-cultural human connection without expectations."
I get emotional and teary for all the street food vendors in Southeast Asia. The hours they put in, the hospitality they provide with such limited resources. Let go of expectations. Be humble. Be open. Be patient.

Rest in Peace, Tony
One of the real ones.
He even made an episode in Gaza showing the food and culture.
Respect.

La Estancia del Puerto is the legendary parilla restaurant in El Mercado del Puerto in Montevideo, Uruguay where Anthony Bourdain and his brother Christopher achieved la puta madre de meat sweats in No Reservations season 4, episode 12. I had a salad for dessert. It was worth the 20 hour plane trip to get here.

Was just having a conversation about my sister's new kitchen knives and it made me think of Anthony #Bourdain and how much the world lost when he committed suicide in 2018.

Just watched Roadrunner, about Anthony Bourdain.
Didn’t know much about him until 2018 when he was a speaker at our company event (it was in May in New Orleans). Yes, I guess I’ve lived under a rock most of my life. And I actually had customer meetings while he was on stage at that event and didn’t even get to see him.
The movie was a bit of a manic depressive ride, kind of like his life. I’m sure it was intentional on the part of the director. Sad but also worth watching.

Transcript: Once you’ve been to #Cambodia, you’ll never stop wanting to beat Henry #Kissinger to death with your bare hands. You will never again be able to open a #newspaper and read about that treacherous, prevaricating, murderous scumbag sitting down for a nice chat with Charlie #Rose or attending some black-tie affair for a new glossy magazine without choking. Witness what Henry did in Cambodia – the fruits of his genius for statesmanship – and you will never understand why he’s not sitting in the dock at #TheHague next to #Milošević. While Henry continues to nibble nori rolls and remaki at A-list parties, Cambodia, the neutral nation he secretly and illegally bombed, invaded, undermined, and then threw to the dogs, is still trying to raise itself up on its one remaining leg. My wife said Anthony #Bourdain was waiting in the afterlife with a baseball bat. My question is whether he needs a day pass to Hell or can just wait along the side of "Good Intentions" Boulevard for the caisson to drag old Henry past.

Tim K #Mak has been delivering some pretty good reporting from Ukraine for a while on his blog "The #Counteroffensive" and today's foray into the country's culinary traditions is no different. In it he shines a light on the speed with which #Ukraine is leaving her #Soviet past behind to establish herself as a nation with a unique culture and outlook, using Anthony #Bourdain's Ukrainian episodes of his TV show "No reservations" as a backdrop to today's food scene.

In 2011, he visited #Ukraine for season seven of his hit show, 'No Reservations.'
But the Ukraine that #Bourdain toured and ate around bears little resemblance to today's Ukraine.
Ukraine back then was still recovering from its Soviet hangover.
