Bad news the original company #unbound went into administration, another company was formed #boundless to try and rescue it. This has also failed:

The liquidations eliminates any remaining hope for the 238 authors and agents who are owed £657,000 by Unbound, nearly 8,000 customers owed £391,000 for pre-ordered books, and trade creditors owed £829,000 when the original company collapsed in March.

San Francisco’s library patrons are about to lose access to one of their most-used ebook platforms — the latest ripple effect of a crisis shaking the library supply industry nationwide.

The San Francisco Public Library announced that Boundless, its largest ebook supplier, will go offline Dec. 8 after its parent company, Baker & Taylor, said it will cease operations at the end of 2025.

The closure of the nearly 200-year-old distributor has sent libraries across the country scrambling to find new vendors and digital access points for readers.

“Due to the company’s sudden closure, the Boundless platform will end,” the library said in a statement.

Boundless users will be unable to place new holds after Monday, Nov. 17, and must check out any remaining titles by Nov. 24.

  5. #Unbound / #Boundless / #NeemTreePress , who lately ran into "trouble" because they "went out of business" and transferred the book rights to an entity which 'disclaim(ed) any legal obligation to make good on Unbound’s debts and describing the disbursement of unpaid royalties and invoices as “goodwill payments”–which, by the way, would not be paid' ... has apparently run out of business?

Hopefully with the rights actually returning to the authors?

    patreon.com/posts/135780549?ut

If the affected writers had some clarity that for sure their rights had been restored, this would be good news after a fashion.

  6. :: sigh ::

Organisers of the (alleged) SCAM Should go to JAIL.

TLDR: #Unbound - the crowd sourcing book #publisher - went into Liquidation / Administration. New company #Boundless (set up by Unbound's former owners) claimed liquidation was to sort out finances and all obligations to customers and authors would still be honoured.

Now they are taking all the money, - including YEARS OF PENDING BACKPAY- not paying Authors and not fulfilling Customer book orders.

    Scum.

  12. Tom Cox: "I was invited onto BBC Radio 4's You And Yours today to talk about Unbound, who owe me and their other authors around £650,000 in total, which is not even taking into account the readers they have refused to refund."

  13. That’s a far cry from the tens of thousands of pounds authors who published them have lost. But it means that the other side of the #Unbound / #Boundless machine is just as rotten. Books are selling. Authors aren’t getting paid AND customers aren’t receiving what they bought.

    @alicemcalicepants

  14. Laura Kate Dale says there are rumours that Unbound was expecting a big investment and decided to pre-spend it by dipping into author royalties.

  15. Chuck, author of Bird Brain, didn’t even get the email telling them they weren’t getting paid.

  16. Brian Bilston, poet, is owed an unspecified amount.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  17. Daniel Hardcastle, author of The Paradox Paradox, is owed £40k.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  18. Tom Cox, author of many books, published seven through Unbound. He’s owed more than £20k.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  19. Small Robots, who I think published a picture book of their art work, is owed an unspecified amount.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  20. Russell Jones, who wrote The Decade in Tory: An Inventory of Idiocy from the Coalition to COVID, is owed 7k.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  21. Alex de Campi, who wrote The Scottish Boy, is owed $8k.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  22. Laura Kate Dale, who wrote Gender Euphoria, is owed £8k.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  23. Aaron Reynolds of Effin’ Birds is owed £75k, including royalties paid by a US publisher to Unbound.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  24. I supported several books through Unbound, bought others, and borrowed some from my library. Seeing how they’ve shafted so many people out of so much money, I’m really feeling like I participated in this scam. It’s awful. I’ve lined the coffers of management at the expense of the authors.

    #Boundless #Unbound

  25. That leaves authors having to choose between:
    A. Playing nice and letting #Boundless keep selling their books, hoping they’ll someday get some of the money they’re owed (while allowing that figure to increase daily); or
    B. Claiming rights reversion on the basis of nonpayment, thereby cutting their losses to an entire year’s worth of income and having to start fresh on their own.

    #Unbound

  26. And #Boundless are stringing these authors along. Saying things like: We feel terrible so we’ll make goodwill payments of as much of your outstanding royalties as we possibly can.

    #Unbound

  27. I know it's bad form to post links to Bluesky, but one of the authors owed several thousand dollars by #Unbound has found a clause in their contract that means the new (and ever more fucked up) #Boundless doesn't own their work.

Please read this thread by Alex De Campi:

And if you were thinking about working with #Boundless or its principals: don't. #Scam

  28. Heard from a favourite author today that Unbound or their new incarnation Boundless *not* be refunding backers of his outstanding unpublished books. I have £48.50 worth of unpublished books still owed from them - books by other authors, but probably the same applies. I guess that's vanished then. Furious doesn't even come close. #Unbound #Books #Bookstodon #Publishing #Boundless #Crowdfunding
