My first book read (in just 2 days) on my #XteinkX4 was Chrono Trigger by Michael P. Williams
The second of the #BossFightBooks series, a memoir, critique and analysis of my favourite game of all time.
To be honest it was a bit less technical or historical than I'd like, but I enjoyed it nonetheless and the interviews with Ted Woosley and Tom Slattery were a highlight for me. A good read and kinda short too

I keep reading every book in the #BossFightBooks collection.
Everquest, by Matthew S. Smith, takes a journalistic approach (like Minesweeper or Day of the Tentacle recently). I usually prefer the ones that are personal (e.g. Galaga, WoW) but some of the last ones have not been great.
Therefore, if you want to know everything about the main inspiration for World of Warcraft, it's in that book. It is extremely well paced and well written. You recognise the work of a professional journalist. Sadly, there is no real place for reception: how did people play it? Who were these people, what did the game bring to them, how did they organise, etc. I would have enjoyed a few testimonies from common players.
Still, I totally recommend it! Good work Matthew S. Smith.

Picked up this very cool Boss Fight Books bundle from Humble. Especially interested to read the Metal Gear Solid, GoldenEye and Spelunky books (the latter of which is written by the dev which is really cool!)
I'll say though (and not trying to be hyper critical here) the cover art on these aren't ideal. The GoldenEye one is actually the deluxe edition which has different cover art (I'll need to update it manually), but as a whole these are all very uninspiring.
I know they're probably stock/public domain images and the production budget probably isn't massive for these books, but surely a few more people might be drawn in to buy these full price with some more appealing covers!
That's a nitpick though - excited to read through them all!

For those unfamiliar, Boss Fight Books is like the 33 1/3rd of video games-- each volume's by a different author, doing a deep dive of a different video game. Really neat stuff.
I ... don't have anything handy to pitch to them this go-round, sadly. Though I suppose I could try rambling on about Mass Effect 2 or somesuch. (It's the best one).

Just finished reading Minesweeper by Kyle Orland in the #BossFightBooks series. Great book, very instructive on the game's origins as well as its speedrun scene. More of a journalistic tone than a personal one.
