  2. LOL - Eugene has this - it's over on Coburg Road. Seriously, go look: the Mattress store is across from the supplements store and it's next to the Batteries Plus store. Zero traffic, every day.

  6. @edmond Musk is creating the Dead Internet in real time!

Buying the control of online discourse is the most boring (but perhaps effective) super-villain move.

  7. So, so many of these.

Fake people from fake companies offering fake AI-generated @LinkedIn profile armies to spam inboxes.

All looking superficially like real people, with plausible career paths, biographies, names & corporate portraits.

“While there’s no guarantee in human life, we provide a guarantee in LinkedIn profile life, typically ranging from 48-72 hours.”

What could possibly ever go wrong.

  8. At work today, I witnessed a co-worker get so furious over meeting schedules. The boss scheduled a meeting to discuss a deliverable that is not ready to be reviewed (I know, extremely riveting). We gave the team reviewing it until next week to give us this info to review but boss wasn't aware. No biggie in my head.

Instead of just reaching out to inform the boss this info (which we eventually did), this co-worker unleased 15 minutes of whining, bitching, and anger over an Outlook invite.

Anyhow, what's your favorite medieval butt trumpet pic?

  9. Anyone touting the potential benefits of AI should just be reminded that we built a machine that identifies people who are at risk for falling into despair, and instead of using it to help better those people's lives, we used it to speed their descent so that they could be sold diet pills and emergency rations. #dystopia #BoringDystopia

  11. Data centers will be our Easter Island heads. Whatever comes next - alien, cyborg, fungus folk - will be baffled by giant buildings full of funny plastic sandwiches buried in the desert... #boringdystopia

  12. The fun new future, where every support chat from now on can help you with your coding problems. Even your bank.

  13. @mergesort
"What will happen to AI is boring old capitalism. Its staying power will come in the form of replacing competent, expensive humans with crappy, cheap robots."

Great (if slightly depressing) antidote to the current round of AI hype. My takeaway: Over time, all new tech regresses to the #boringdystopia mean.

  14. While it’s certainly possible to evade some of that spending, it’s not easy, and not possible for everyone all the time. After I have commuted, worked all day, and then commuted again, I sometimes must make a trade-off between preparing a meal for the next day—and sacrificing sleep or time with my children—or just buying it from a restaurant.

And, to the greatest extent possible, our rentier capital class is trying to make even those small possibilities of evasion impossible. In many places, your ability to engage in the basic human functions of urination and defecation are contingent on making purchases—“toilets are for customers only.”

In our ever-darkening dystopia, we’re now given the choice to relieve ourselves “for free” in public toilets, as long as we first pay the sellers of smartphones for access.
