Recently, the executive branch has used increasingly militaristic framings and rhetoric. For example, the administration claims that their policies are about repelling an alleged “invasion.” People who migrate to find work, start businesses, escape violence and persecution, or live with their families are not an invading army! While some immigrants commit crimes, this is not the same thing as an invasion. Legal scholar Ilya Somin has carefully refuted the “invasion” argument multiple times.
Militarized attempts to secure the border or enforce immigration laws have serious collateral consequences for ordinary Americans. These consequences are exacerbated by the fact that the militarized tools developed to secure the border are often turned toward domestic issues unrelated to border security. As a result, border militarization reshapes governance in a way that threatens freedom for all Americans.
As the Border Patrol becomes increasingly militarized and increasingly involved in domestic life, it threatens the basic liberties of American citizens."
