I got to spend much of this weekend at the UK Bootblacking Competition 2025 with @bigboyjoe.bsky.social . The company was a delight as ever, but getting out into queer spaces for two nights running was something I hadn't realised how much I needed.

Hunter Aug 2025 | Bootblack’s Eye View

This hunter was a fun one. I didn’t see a lot of regular faces. A lot of people were either away on trips of just not wanting to come out in the heat.

My chair however saw a lot of new faces/boots and i got to do more than a few peoples first time in a bootblacks chair.

I also got to do a first of my own: I got to do a conditioning of a puppies leather hood.

This Hunter was a lot of fun. I really wasn’t sure how busy it was, since it seemed like half of all London kinksters were in Berlin for the Folsom Easter weekend.

However it turned out to be a really nice crowed.

I also got to reconnect with some friends who I had not seen in a very long while and had some very interesting conversations with people on the bootblack stand.

I also had a challenging pair of boots. these were old army boots that had been used extensively on a construction site and were worse for wear. I was able to give them advice on what pair of boots to look for next for construction work. (see if you can guess from the photos who was the constriction workie)

I was even able to have some pre planed fun with some people in the darkroom after my shift.

The times I get to work alongside other bootblacks are always a treasure.

This Hunter Bootblack Joshi was again visiting, and took the early shift this time so I had a wonderfull time chatting and getting to catch up with people.

I got to use my new setup with my new kitbox helping keep things a little more organised.

The new lighting setup using a neck light wasn’t such a success and I’ll be looking into getting a new hedband like like Joshi had on.

Tonight was extreamly sexually charged. I had a lot of hot men deliberately pressing thier boot’s in on my stomach and crotch while I worked on, and this was not unwelcome.

Also got to add in a few fun instances of boot licking with some friends.

January’s Hunter. This was a night I enjoyed more than i thought i would.

The reason i worried about my enjoyment is that I had already been out all day at a corperate event in the city.

With no time to travel back home to pick up my kit I was stick lugging it round with me all day.

Luckilly my friend Ox (pictured in the Gallery in the vest and blue ) offered me a place to put my feet up and gave me a hearty meal between the corperate event and the fun sexy event.

I also tried something @banjo came up with. Bodywriting “tip your bootblack” on my back. It was fun and maybe i will try out similar things in the future.

My chair was also a little less buisy than normal, with only 5 Johns. this was a good thing because it meant i got to have more fun. it felt nice to chill and talk with people after doing thier boots. Bootblacking is often about the connection with the person you are working on and i was really feeling it tonight.

I also loved that the bootblack stand was right underneath the christmas tree. That felt special.

Take a Stand Amsterdam

I visit Amsterdam often to see my Master, but this time my visit had a duel purpose.

This year the Take a Stand event was being held in Amsterdam, in my favourite bar there, The Web.

The event is a gathering of bootblacks by bootblacks for bootblacks.

Often we are kind of always a tack-on to bigger events. A feature. For Take a Stand it’s all about

As far as I know, this was the first time Take a Stand has been held outside america and I am very grateful to the organisers for doing so.

They actually brought a full portable bootblack stand with them!

This is the first time I have ever gotten to work with a purpose built stand rather than rigging together seats and benches.

I got there kind of early and got to meet so many of the other bootblacks from all over Europe and the USA. Both baby bootblacks starting out, seasoned ones and title holders.

it was so cool to meet so many amazing people.

It was a fun time comparing kits and experiences.

In total there were 4 stations we roted through.

I kind of regret not making sure I had a turn up in the one set up in the dark room.

It’s also the first time I have gotten to bootblack for my Master in public, and I was very grateful he could be there.

We actually were the first bootblack and John on the big stand!

At the end of the night we downed brushes for a combination of a charity auction, and to each have a turn in the spotlight.

It felt like a very special moment, to stand before my peers and community and have our achievements read out and acknowledged.

This typifies one of the things I love about the bootblacking community. We are, for the most part, collaborative, not competitive.

Steps to become a Bootblack

STEP 1 – learn how to do a shine

STEP 2 – get the basics for your kit

STEP 3 – Start bootblacking privately as part of kinky hookups.

STEP 4 – Start bootblacking publicly in bars.

STEP 5 – Get to know more bootblacks

STEP 6 – Realise how much gender diversity and expression exists in the bootblack community. Realise how many bootblacks are trans or nonbinary.

As you learn more about all the ways people can experience their gender identity and express gender, start to think deeply for the first time how you feel internally.

Start to realise how you feel internally doesn’t match up to what a lot of other people experience with their gender. Sit with that a bit. Wonder if you are more on the nonbinary spectrum.

Learn about different gender identities outside the binary, and one description resonates with you. Is that a right fit for you? Look around you and feel like a fraud for not being gender-nonconforming enough.

Decide to add they as secondary pronouns, just as a show of support and to help normalise it in society.

Slowly, start to talk about how you feel with close friends. Start to test the waters by low-key slipping your duel pronouns into bios.

Grow more comfortable thinking yourself as nonbinary, even if you mostly still present as your birth gender.

Start to talk publicly about being nonbinary.

Have friends tell you helped them by being openly nonbinary, and they are now going through their own journeys of self discovery. Feel like a fraud because you don’t feel ready to be an example to others. But you’re also happy, you can help.
