To close out my "triology" of opinion this morning, I want to mention my other favorite music book, "The best rock and roll records of all time : a fan's guide to the really great stuff" by Jimmy Guterman. (https://archive.org/details/bestrockrollreco0000gute)
It is, of course, just an opinion. There are many, many other recordings which are great, even within the genre of Rock and Roll. Even not including all the great music that has been released since the book was written in the 1990s.
I had not read much music criticism before coming across that book (sadly on a closeout table in a bookstore -- remember browsing bookstores??). I have to say he totally opened my eyes to the world of music outside Top 40 radio.
He constrained himself to one album per artist and for the most excluded compilations and box sets (two notable exceptions were #Dylan and #JamesBrown ). He some attempt to make the list less white and male than what his original perceptions had been.
I have been able to find almost every album in the book and have enjoyed almost all of them. More than a few of them I was blown away by. I have added more than a few artists to my "heavy rotation," especially #NickLowe.
Each entry is a love letter to the artist discussed. If you have any interest whatsoever in "#BoomerMusic" I think this book is a great place to start.
