This week I got some news I'd been hoping for in finding out that I sold a short story to an anthology project. I don't want to say too much, though the contract is signed, and the project is for speculative fiction stori

  6. Writing My Life’s Purpose
Animals have always played an important role in my life. Growing up, I felt as if my pets understood me far better than any people. Animals were my safe harbor in a very turbulent upbringing, and even before I realized I was neurodivergent and what that entailed, my connection with animals help me to

  7. Why I write a lot of 99 cent and free ebooks
I hate the term "loss leader" because to me, telling a story and getting it out to the reading public is never a loss. When marketing people use the term "loss leader" it reminds me of just how much books have been widgetized over the last decade or more, and how many people in the publishing ecosys

  12. When Norbert Wiener published "God & Golem, Inc." in 1964, his reflections appeared to many as an esoteric extension of cybernetics into folklore.

We’re learning this the hard way in 2025. Our systems don’t just capture useful patterns from vast human data.

They also inherit distortions, strategies, even impulses we never intended.

#Alignment has become our constant concern, a reminder that what we ask for and what we get are rarely symmetrical.

  13. Equestrian Academy Books and Rich Girls
I'm old enough to have read the Saddle Club books when they first came out. The stories of Steve, Carol, and Lisa seemed like the kind of fun adventures I'd love to have at a barn with friends...if I had a barn and friends. But I lived vicariously through them, and though I outgrew the books (

  30. Tim Johnston's DISTANT SONS: 5* A multilayered book that is so much more than the mystery at its focus. I'll say right up front that Johnston just wows. This one of my top reads of the year.

  32. The Brothers Hawthorne by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

This is the 4th entry in the Inheritance Games series. The books are a mashup of #ActionAdventure and #mystery and are a lot of fun, with snappy dialogue and good puzzles. Recommended on #audiobook too.

  33. Shield Maiden by Sharon Emmerichs (3.5 stars)

A kind of retelling of the end of the Beowulf saga. Here, the king's niece, Fryda, is made the hero and her twin brother, Wiglaf, is the villain.

Though much of the story was predictable (even for those unfamiliar with Beowulf), the #audiobook was entertaining.
