This dilemma applies to renewable energy, too: the current trajectory points toward deserts chock full of privatized or semi-privatized (authoritarian-owned) solar panels that need to be replaced all the time. Little or no thought is ever given to, like, winding down the advertising or consulting industries so we don’t need as much power in the first place. #book #books #bookstoread #BookCommunity #bookCollection #bookstodan #bookstodon

Whenever someone says something like “we just need to build MORE STUFF, we need ABUNDANCE, and that would solve everything,” they often just mean tweaking the current setup, e.g. by swapping out fossil fuels for solar and wind. This won’t work because it relies on having to constantly increase scarcity and deplete public wealth, while destroying the environment along the way. But hey at least GDP went up! #book #books #bookstoread #BookCommunity #bookCollection #bookstodan #bookstodon

Golumbia hits a grand fucking slam here: Mike Masnick and other self-absorbed, nominally “leftist” online activists loathe DRM, even tho 1) it’s the exact type of narrow technical fix (rather than a political or social one) that they champion in other contexts and 2) they love encryption of their own communications and files. Also, Richard Stallman-esque opposition to DRM is intellectually incoherent. #book #books #booksToRead #booklover #bookstodan

Way too many liberals who should know better spend all day correctly railing against Big Tech as the destructors of democracy but then acting like repealing Section 230 (something that other countries do just fine without and which disproportionately benefits Meta and Alphabet in the US specifically) would be intolerable. It’s absurd. #book #books #bookstodon #bookstodan

So glad Mike Masnick has berated people over Section 230 so that Grindr scammers can continue to make people fear for their lives. Great job Mike 🙄 #book #books #bookstodan #bookstodon

The #MIT Media Lab, which launders insane #AI propaganda into respectable-sounding jargon, also fancies itself an authority on “ethics,” which nevertheless didn’t stop it from continuing to accept money from Jeffrey Epstein after he’d been convicted and disqualified from the university’s database. #books #bookstodan #bookstoread #book

Just finished #Suspects by #DanielleSteel. I think this may be the first of hers that I have read. Critics say she is formulaic, something that would be hard to avoid given the number of books she has written. I liked this book. I found it gripping. #bookstodan

Woohoo! I have officially met my 2022 #Goodreads goal! I'm still sewing, have an audiobook out on Libby, and have 15 books on my "Currently Reading" list, but I feel like I can maybe finally start the three hardback books that have been at the top of my TBR for a while: a sequel (A Venom Dark and Sweet), a spinoff (Foul Lady Fortune), and the first of a new duology (Daughter of the Moon Goddess).
