  1. I do not know yet what is in it.

I do not know that two people from that same meeting are somewhere reading it right now, alone,
in the way that people read things they are not yet ready to be changed by.

What I know is that it arrived in this room,
    in this community,
    at this moment.
That does not feel like a coincidence.

    To be continued.

  2. I joined the call.

They didn't ask what took so long.
    They made room.

That is what this community was always for.

    Not the good times only.
Not the version of me that has it together.
    All of it.

    They built that with me.

    I just forgot,
for longer than I cared to admit,
that I was part of the building.

    To be continued.

  3. You have shown up for them in that way more times than you can count.
You have not let them show up for you in a while.

This time, the grief changed that.

    To be continued.

  4. Hey nerds, I'm working on a super secret important project that only I probably care about, but one important aspect involves book search (as in searching for books)... specifically, providing links to searches by isbn and by title.

I would like the links to take users to search results at decent organizations—truly nonprofit .org sites, whatever. Or, in other words, I wish to not just direct users to Amazon.

One obvious candidate is Bookshop.org, but I see a relatively low hit rate for more obscure titles. Worldcat.org seems to do a good job. I now that Goodreads is popular, seems to have a decent hit rate, and I intend to offer it as an _option_, but I don't know that I want to make that the default. I definitely want to stay away from the search majors, or any destination which would de-facto compromise users' privacy if I send them there.

    Thanks!

  5. News Summary: Libro.fm Plans E-Book Launch, Expanding Support for Independent Bookstores

Libro.fm announced at the end of last week that it will soon be offering e-books through its platform. This marks yet another significant step in the general trend toward making it easier for devoted readers who want to support local bookstores to do so in whatever format they read.

  6. This book names what is happening and why it keeps happening regardless of who is in the room. It does not offer comfort. It offers clarity. And clarity, right now, is the most useful thing I know how to give.

  8. News Summary: Amazon Raises KDP 70% Royalty Cap to $12.99; Bookshop.org Launches Audiobooks in UK

Breaking news: as of July 7, Amazon has extended the upper limit of the 70 percent KDP royalty bracket to $12.99 from $9.99. That allows some books to have a higher ticket price reflecting an author's desire to price within the market, without having to take a hit down to the 35 percent royalty rate. For those in that $10–$12.99 range currently, you may be eligible to switch to 70 percent per the FAQs, but will not automatically be switched.

  9. Thanks @mlanger and @jkirkendall for putting bookshop.org's #AntiPrimeDay on my radar.

They didn't have the used book I was looking for, but still got $100 worth of impulse buys out of me ala their many awesome postcard boxed sets.

  11. News Summary: Bookshop.org Sales Surge 55% to $70 Million; E-books Now 5% of Total Sales

We start the week with some good news that segues interestingly out of the news that many indie authors have found alarming at the end of last week. The indie corner of the internet has been filled with little other than discussion (much heated) of Draft2Digital's decision to introduce fees for new and low-activity accounts in the face (it claims) of a vast increase in artificially generated content.

  13. Writers and book folks,
I'm looking at Bookshop.org affilate program, as in affilate links on my website for books that I'm recommending as related to my podcast episodes (plus my own books!), and I'm wondering:

Is there no minimum initial sales required to join the affilate program? Like 3 sales in 60 days or something.

This seems too good to be true, but I find no mention of it online.

    Thanks!

  14. Lilbits: Intel Wildcat Lake specs leaked, Pixel 11 and Onn 4K Stick leaks, and would you buy a Bookshop.org eReader?

Intel’s Alder Lake-N and Twin Lake processors have been incredibly popular with makers of budget mini PCs, Chromebooks, and other entry-level computers. With up to eight 12th-gen Intel Efficiency CPU cores, these cheap, low-power chips brought big performance gains over Intel’s earlier Atom, Celeron, and Pentium Silver processors.

But they’re starting to show their age, which is why I’ve had […]
