  1. Is anyone on Mastodon knowledgeable about Tironian notes? I've got tentative readings of two headings in a 9th c. Text from the Loire Valley, which mix Tironian notes and Latin charaters. But there are 13,000 T. Notes in Schmitz, many of which look very similar. Thanks!!

  6. Nouvel article sur mon carnet de recherches :

“L’expositio missae de Florus de Lyon : un état de la tradition”
    🔗 florus.hypotheses.org/2449

Quelles éditions ? Quels manuscrits ? Quel public au moyen âge ?

  7. Book and paper history bubble: I came across a late 18th-century almanach-style notebook in the @labnf today which has a metal stylus (I don’t know whether this is the original one) and is supposedly made of a special paper that can be written on with any metal point. If writing with the provided stylus you are supposed to be able to erase. Marketed as a novelty - but it is? Anyone know more about this or where I might look for further clues?

  13. #Introduction again since I moved servers to here! I'm Alex, a PhD student in Information Science at Indiana University. I study book history, especially booksellers and private libraries in early modern Navarre/Spain. I'm interested in the intersections between book history and infosci, bringing GIS, digital humanities, and quantitative methods to book history. Whenever I graduate, I want to be a DH librarian! I'm also the bibliographer for the Chymistry of Isaac Newton project and for SHARP News! #BookHistory #DigitalHumanities #GIS #Data #Libraries #bookhistodons

  20. Oh, I take it back: not really a 'review', but 'A history of scientific journals' has just had a mention in this week's Nature! (=one more evidence of a human reader!)

But my general point holds: dissemination/circulation of books is vastly improved by #oa, but I'm not yet convinced it is making much difference to response/engagement for books (as against articles). But we shall see. It's still early days. And books do take time to read, after all.

  22. Great example of #EarlyModern almanacs
    as everyday objects.

Christophe Plantin annotated the verso side of this almanac he had printed for 1577. He added the date 17 October 1576, and wrote down a list of the proofreaders who worked for him at the time below some calculations!

  24. In journalism, one person’s pain is another’s profession.
    Raymond Schroth

The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of the exemplification process for people who are pursued as exemplars in the telling of a news story.
“exemplar”: a victim or eyewitness who provides a reaction or testimonial regarding a newsworthy event.

  26. Some more #BookHistory teaching—today, it’s our paper marbling workshop! We experimented with different papers to test out how well they took the ink and how the different colors behaved on varying surfaces. Some of the most beautiful effects turned out to be on colored paper, which allowed a very subtle jacquard-like finish. #bookhistodons #pedagogy
