  1. Booker Ervin, The Freedom Book, 1964 on Prestige

Sixth full-length with Ervin as leader, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1963, for Prestige. Ervin is joined here by Jaki Byard (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Alan Dawson (who was a drum instructor at Berklee in Boston) (drums).

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2023 Analogue Productions / Craft Recordings reissue, in the Prestige Stereo Series. It was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at QRP on 180g vinyl.

  2. Horace Parlan - Up & Down

Pretty stellar combo with Parlan on piano, Booker Ervin on sax, Grant Green on guitar, George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums.

Always a little amusing to have a van Gelder engineered piece with a piano-led group…where everything sounds great BUT that. Comes with the territory…

  3. Mal Waldron - The Quest

Seemed an appropriate follow-on to Dialogue, as this is in a similar vein.

Waldron (piano) is the band leader here (although this has also come out as an Eric Dolphy release, likely due to comparative popularity at the time), with Dolphy (alto sax, clarinet), Booker Ervin (tenor sax), Ron Carter (cello), Joe Benjamin (bass), and Charlie Persip (drums).

  4. Booker Ervin - The Song Book

    Little catch-up from Thursday/Friday.

I don't know if they felt there was a little "one for them, one for me" feeling when making an album interpreting popular songs/standards, but this was definitely not phoned in.

Good performances all around, nice soloing, good RvG recording. Very enjoyable.

  5. Booker Ervin - Exultation!

1963 Prestige release of Ervin and Frank Strozier (on tenor), backed by Horace Parlan (piano), Butch Warren (bass) and Walter Perkins (drums).

Some great bop and soloing by all on this nice RvG recording, given a fresh mastering by Kevin Grey and pressing by QRP/Acoustic Sounds.
